Last week in Italy I had the great pleasure to sing Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. Alongside me, soprano Kamilla Karginova, mezzo Marianna Acito, bass Luca Gallo, Ferdinando Mussutto and Michele Bravin at the piano and harmonium, and Coro Polifonico Sant'Antonio Abate, conducted by Eddi De Nadai.

'Voices from the Frozen World' had its premiere yesterday at the Old Divinity School in Cambridge!

Soprano Naomi Rogers, pianist Patrick Hemmerlè, and marine ecologist Jen Freer captivated the audience, discussing the incredible ecosystem of Antarctica and performing songs by Edward Nesbit and me. Lots of questions at the end, during a nice chat with the audience!

Such an honour and a pleasure to have my music performed by these wonderful musicians in such an impressive venue... now looking forward to bringing our 'Voices from the Frozen World' to its next steps!

📆 next stop: Antarctica!

Voices from the Frozen World is a concert I’ve been working on over the past months, bringing together music and science around Antarctica, a place most of us will never see, but which is more connected to our lives than it might seem.

The programme includes two of my pieces:
– Cumha an Nàdair (world premiere), my latest piece: a lament for nature;
– A Tale of Light and Fear (UK premiere), on a poem by marine ecologist Jennifer Freer;

alongside the beautiful song cycle In Antarctica by Edward Nesbit, based on the diaries of Scott’s expedition.

Soprano Naomi Rogers and pianist Patrick Hemmerlé will perform, and Jennifer Freer (from the British Antarctic Survey) will contribute a scientific perspective alongside the music.

It’s not so much a “themed concert” as an attempt to approach the same place from different angles - sound, words, and science.

Time for another Italian Journey!

There is something curious about working on a programme like Italian Journey while living abroad. Certain pieces begin to shift in meaning: they are no longer just repertoire, but places. Venice, Naples, Rome, Mantua — not so much as points on a map, but as states of mind, colours, ways of breathing.

The idea behind the programme is simple, almost obvious: to move across Italy through some of its most iconic opera arias by Verdi, Donizetti, and Puccini, and then to change scale completely, turning to the Italian romanze da salotto of Tosti and Respighi. From the theatre to the salon, from something public and outward to something more intimate, almost private.

And yet, each time we return to it, the journey seems to acquire a slightly different meaning. Perhaps distance has something to do with it. Or perhaps, more simply, it is a way of missing home.
