Just a word today about cross body exercise…. What does this mean? Cross-body (or ‘contralateral’) movements are exercises which involve your limbs moving across the body's midline - think up and overs, criss cross, lunge and twist, woodchoppers etc. Every time you cross your body’s midline, both sides of your brain activate at once and especially
for people after the age of 40, this is vital for cognitive function and brain longevity. This kind of movement enhances coordination and motor skills, and by simultaneously engaging both sides of the body, encourages better balance and spatial awareness.
For menopausal women, these exercises can really help reduce brain fog, improve coordination, and calm the nervous system. This is because contralateral exercises can strengthen the limbic system to re-sync the brain’s ability to communicate — calming the mind, supercharging energy, releasing anxiety, and enhancing whole-brain thinking, says
Loren Fishman, MD, director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “Left-right movements release stress and quickly calm the mind,” she confirms. They are therefore highly recommended for combatting menopause-related clumsiness and anxiety.
It’s easy as we get older to allow our movements to become so much smaller, and without challenging ourselves to be bigger, to extend, to challenge our norm... we lose it all. So enjoy the challenge of the cross body strength moves knowing that you’re lighting up both hemispheres of your brain even if the co-ordination isn’t easy, and get stuck into the cross
body plyo (it doesn’t have to be perfect!) knowing all the good it’s doing both your brain and body. We’ll see you in class ladies!
