🐻 What are fine motor skills?

⭐ Fine motor skills refer to your child's small muscles such as those in their hands, wrists and fingers working in coordination with their eyes.

🐻 These skills enable functions such as writing, grasping small objects and fastening clothing to take place successfully.

⭐ They are important to develop at a young age so that when they start school, your child will be able to hold a pencil with a good strong grip, begin to make marks and form their letters.

Here are some fun activities that will strengthen your child's fine motor skills.

👶💬 What's the best way to help toddlers say words properly?

Recasting.

👶💬 Recasting is when you repeat what your child says back to them, in a sentence and using the correct words, no matter what mistakes they may have made. A common one is saying plurals incorrectly - 'sheeps' instead of 'sheep', or 'foots' instead of 'feet'.

If you were to say to your child 'where do your socks go?' and they respond 'foots', you would say 'yes, that's right they go on your feet', with a big smile and plenty of encouragement.

This way you don't draw attention to their mistake and make them feel bad for getting it wrong. Instead you just simply let them hear it said correctly.

Over time, the more they hear the correct words, the more likely they will be to get it right in future and be able to build more complex sentences.

Here's the article from Speech Lab: Recasting - The Speech Lab

Singing also has lots of health and developmental benefits for your little ones.
Singing out loud releases feel-good hormones called endorphins that make you feel happy and positive.

There is also a tiny part of your inner ear, called the sacculus, that releases even more happy hormones when it’s stimulated by music.

Not only is it good for your mental health and mood, but research has shown that singing can actually help build your children's brain development and overall immune system.

Singing to babies prepares them for communicating later in life as it helps them get used to the structure and inflections of their native language.

Singing also strengthens their lips and tongues which encourages clear speaking, and also expands their vocabulary.

Thank you to CAMHS Professionals for sharing and promoting the importance of singing to or with babies and children.

Singing rhymes and repeating the songs again and again encourages the development of rhythm and rhyme, memory and sequencing laying the foundations for early phonics, supporting children and babies with their listening skills and sound discrimination.

Developing memory through sequencing and repetition through nursery rhymes and rhyming songs is a wonderful way to build relationships and form strong loving bonds. It also helps children to learn the art of rhyming words and through moments of pause, babies can learn the art of conversation and turn taking through the sounds they make in response, their ooohs and ahhhs.

This can be extended further by playing with words and replacing initial sounds with other phonemes, creating funny rhymes.

Snowman discovery bags

⛄️ For this activity you will need: paper bags and paint sticks.
Choose the letters you want your child to learn for this activity.

❄️ Preparation:
Quickly draw a snowman on each bag. They don’t need to be perfect, just something that your little one will find enticing. Write the letters you want your little one to practice on the snowman’s body. One letter for each bag.

⛄️ Place different items that start with that letter into each bag. Look around the house for different toys, flashcards, and small items that start with the letter you want your child to learn. Place them in the bags and line them up. Invite your toddler or preschooler to have a look in each bag and discover what is inside.

❄️ To play:
Letting you toddler or preschooler discover what is inside is a great way to introduce this activity. As they pull things out ask them what it is. Repeat the word emphasizing the beginning sound. Point to the snowman on the bag and identify the letter on it. Let them continue pulling things out and identifying objects emphasizing the beginning letter sound.

⛄️ Once they have finished taking all the objects out, encourage them sort the objects back into the correct bags. Again identify the object, emphasizing the beginning letter sound and connecting that with the letter on the snowman.
