We may not be having fires at Green Folk at the moment, but that doesn't mean we can't have smores - check out these solar ovens we made at Little Greens this week!

We cut open a box, lined it with foil and black paper, arranged our smores, and left it in the sun to melt. The marshmallows obviously weren't as browned as they would be with the fire, but they were still melty and gooey and delicious 😋

This activity gave us a great opportunity to talk about reflection and absorption and how they work, as well as thinking about the direction of the sun at different times of the day!

Miss out on the fun this time? Don't worry! Wild Greens club for primary aged kids is back on 30th August at Oare Gunpowder Works (£10 per child) and a new term of Little Greens toddler and preschool programme starts at Oare on Monday 7th September and the Physic Garden on Friday 11th September (£48 per child for a six week term). Please email me at [email protected] for more info or to book.

FIRES

Due to the continued very hot and dry weather, we will not be having any fires at our sessions until further notice.

I know that this may be a bit disappointing to some of the children, but given current conditions even if I bring a huge amount of water there is still a risk of sparks catching in nearby dry plants which would be pretty catastrophic.

If your child loves the marshmallows at Green Folk sessions however, don't worry! I have another couple of tricks up my sleeve to ensure they won't miss out.

Here's hoping for rain soon 🌧️

What a magical way to spend a Saturday ✨

It was a real privilege to host a joint birthday party for two of our Little Greens this weekend, and as you can see the magic potions were a real hit! Not pictured was the stream dipping, magic wand making, or the fire, marshmallows, and cake 😋 I'm so glad the children enjoyed themselves!

If you'd like to book a birthday party with me, get in touch today at [email protected] and make the next birthday a wild one 💚

Here at Green Folk HQ we are thrilled to say that we are now home to two gorgeous rescue hedgehogs 🦔 Because they're blind, they're unfortunately unable to be released where they originally found, so needed a secure, messy garden as a forever home and we were very happy to oblige!

Like so much of our wildlife, hedgehogs are in decline in this country. There are many reasons for this, including habitat loss, the use of pesticides, encounters with garden tools, and road accidents (not a lot has changed there since the days of The Animals of Farthing Wood sadly).

How can we help? Well, thankfully there are a few ways! If you have a fence, you could make a small hole (13x13cm is enough) to allow hedgehogs to access, leave parts of your garden wild, and stop using things such as slug pellets in your garden. Also if you're going to strim your garden or have a bonfire, please check for hedgehogs first!

You can supplement their diet if needed with dry cat food if it's poultry based, but PLEASE don't give them milk as it upsets their tummies which can lead to death. Water is all they need fluid wise!

Have you spotted any hedgehogs recently?

Check out this guy! This is a male swollen thighed beetle, and as you can see this is a pretty easily identifiable chap!...

Check out this guy!

This is a male swollen thighed beetle, and as you can see this is a pretty easily identifiable chap!

Swollen thighed beetles eat pollen, so keep an eye out for them on larger flowers such as ox eye daisies, buttercups, and cow parsley.
