What a fantastic way to kick off our South Farnham SCITT 2026/27 teacher training programme!

Today, we welcomed our Secondary cohort – with almost 90 trainee teachers joining our fantastic team to look ahead to the year ahead and begin their training journey. It was a privilege to be part of such an exciting first day and to help set everyone up for success.

The merchandise and pre-reading packs were a pretty great bonus too! 🎉

🌟 Your teaching career is just the beginning! 🌟

As we come to the end of another successful teacher training year, we're incredibly proud of all our SF SCITT trainees. They have worked tirelessly throughout the year, embracing every challenge and opportunity, and will soon be awarded their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – a fantastic milestone and the start of an exciting career in education.

Teaching offers so much more than a first job in the classroom. After achieving QTS and completing your Early Career Teacher (ECT) years, your career could take you in many exciting directions:

✨ Continue as a classroom teacher or become a mentor or lead practitioner.

📚 Progress into leadership roles such as subject leader, assistant headteacher or headteacher.

❤️ Support young people through pastoral care, wellbeing or counselling roles.

🎓 Teach in further or higher education.

It was fantastic to visit Farnborough 6th Form College this week and to deliver our Get Into Teaching seminar!

It was a pleasure to meet such engaged, enthusiastic and thoughtful students who were so receptive throughout the session. We hope we inspired some future teachers to take the next step towards a rewarding career in education.

A huge thank you to everyone at for the warm welcome and for giving us the opportunity to speak with your students. We look forward to visiting again!

*From Trainee to Early Career Teacher - Top Tips*

As our trainee teachers approach the end of their training year and prepare to gain QTS in July, we’re talking about the next exciting stage of their journey: becoming Early Career Teachers (ECTs). 🎓🍎

Whether they'll be continuing their ECT years with our Teaching School Hub or moving on to a new school with a different provider, we're incredibly proud of everything they have achieved so far.

As they prepare for September, Andrew Friend from SFET Teaching School Hub shared some top tips:

✨ Be yourself.
Think about the classroom routines that worked well for you this year. Take inspiration from great teachers you've observed, but don't try to be someone else. Authenticity builds credibility, confidence and strong relationships with pupils.

✨ Get to know your new school.
Do your homework before September. What will be different from your training placement? What questions do you need answered early? Understanding the context of your new school can help manage expectations and make the transition smoother.

✨ Protect your ECT time.
It can be tempting to use your ECT release time for marking, planning or catching up on admin. Try not to. Using this time as it's intended will ensure you can protect a healthy work-life balance and build a routine that is sustainable as you progress through your career.

✨ Keep asking for help.
Although you'll gain QTS in July, there is still much learning ahead. The two-year ECT programme provides an entitlement to personalised support, mentoring and professional development. Take advantage of it. Remember: asking for help isn't admitting that you can't do it. It's recognising that you want to do it even better!

Meet Elliot, a former Surrey South Farnham SCITT trainee whose journey demonstrates how high-quality teacher training can open doors to both leadership and international opportunities.

My training journey with Surrey South Farnham SCITT and later through the Early Career Teacher (ECT) programme was pivotal in shaping my teaching practice and professional growth.

The SCITT provided me with a strong foundation of evidence-informed pedagogy, classroom management, and subject knowledge, while the ECT years gave me the mentoring and structured development needed to refine and embed those skills in practice.

What stood out was the focus on reflective practice and professional dialogue, which gave me the confidence to take on responsibility early in my career. This support and high-quality training prepared me not only to lead science across the school but also to step into my current role as Head of Primary Teaching and Learning, where I am now in my fifth year of teaching (my third in Dubai).

The pathway built by South Farnham has been instrumental in equipping me with the skills, mindset, and resilience to embrace leadership opportunities and to continue developing others.
