Your child can hear the sound… but how are they supposed to know whether to write ow or ou? 🤯

In Year 1, children begin learning that the sounds they already know can be spelled in different ways. This is where spelling patterns can really help.

For the /ow/ sound, a useful pattern is:

✨ ou is usually found in the middle of a word
house • cloud • shout

✨ ow is usually found at the end of a word
cow • how • now

It’s not a rule that works 100% of the time because English loves an exception! 😅 But it gives children a really helpful starting point when deciding which spelling to use.

There are LOTS of little patterns like this that can make spelling feel much less like guesswork.

She didn’t think it could possibly work..

After years and years of trying different things and still not getting him reading, his mum was understandably sceptical.

Dylan has DLD, Developmental Language Disorder, and they had already tried so much.

But now?

📚 Dylan is READING.

Not because someone is making him.
Not because it’s homework.
Not because he’s being pushed.

He’s choosing to pick up a book and read off his own back. 🥹

That is the part that means everything.

Because it’s not just about learning to read.

It’s about a child finally having the confidence to think:

“I can do this.” 💛

Does this sound familiar? 👀

Your child can play for AGES when it’s something they love…

But the second you get the reading book out, suddenly they’re wriggling, looking around the room, asking for a snack and doing absolutely anything BUT reading. 😂

And it’s so easy to think…

“They just can’t concentrate.”

But what if we changed HOW we asked them to learn?

Young children often engage so much better when learning involves movement, play and FUN. 🙌

So instead of always expecting them to sit still, get them moving!

Play Simon Says with sounds.

Hide words around the house for a treasure hunt.

Stick sounds around the room and get them to run to the one you call out.

They’re moving. They’re playing. They’re having fun.

But they’re also practising those reading skills again and again. 📚

And that repetition is what helps learning stick and builds confidence.

Sometimes your child doesn’t need to “try harder” or “concentrate more”.

They just need us to change the way we’re asking them to learn. 💛

The resources were a game changer...

In fact, Sebby’s parents told us they wish his private school used a system like this. ❤️

And honestly, that’s one of the biggest compliments we could receive.

When I asked what made the biggest difference, they kept coming back to the resources.

Not because there are hundreds of them.

But because they’re designed to help children succeed.

What if your gut is telling you your child is struggling with reading, but everyone keeps telling you they’re fine?

“Don’t worry.”

“They’ll catch up.”

“Give it time.”

But YOU see what happens at home.

The avoiding reading.

The guessing words.

The frustration when it just isn’t clicking.

The confidence slowly disappearing.

I spoke to a parent this week who had been told time and time again that there was nothing to worry about.

But eventually, she decided to trust her gut.

And what her daughter said just 6 weeks later gave me goosebumps 🥹❤️

He didn’t want to read… because reading felt HARD. 🥺📚

Louis was behind, struggling and starting to lose that all important enjoyment of reading.

Then something changed. ✨

With the right support, reading started to feel less like “work” and more like a game. He was practising, improving… and actually LOVING it. 💛

And the progress followed.

🚀 He jumped TWO book band levels
⭐ He reached the expected level
📖 And, most importantly, he wanted to read again.

His mum wasn’t focused on book bands or levels. She was just delighted to see him practising, progressing and enjoying himself.

And THAT is exactly what we want at Inspired Minds Learning. 💛

Because when children enjoy learning, they want to keep doing it…and that’s when the magic happens. 🥰

I did NOT expect this ending…

My 3 year old has been getting more confident with his blending lately, so obviously I had to put him to the test 👀

I wrote simple words along his Hot Wheels track and gave him one rule.

Read the word. Drive over it. Keep going. 🏎️

This is exactly how I love to practise phonics with little ones.

Take something they already LOVE and turn it into reading practice that actually feels like play ❤️
