Great fun looking at microorganisms today in Science Club. Amongst other things, we collected the gas given off by yeast respiration, and observed that it (carbon dioxide) is denser than air, made bacteria squishies and edible snot! Also looked at the fungi started last time (by rubbing our dirty hands on bread) down the microscopes.
This week in Science Club we're going to be studying microorganisms. Look at this one!
Yikes ! A parasitic mushroom growing out of a grasshopper. There are several species of parasitic fungi that are known to grow out of insects, including grasshoppers. One such fungus is Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which infects and kills ants and other insects, including grasshoppers.
When an insect becomes infected with Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus grows inside the insect's body and eventually takes over its behavior. The fungus manipulates the insect's behavior, causing it to climb to a high point, where it eventually dies. After the insect dies, the fungus continues to grow and produce spores, which can then infect other insects.
As the fungus grows, it can produce long, slender stalks that protrude from the body of the insect. These stalks can contain the reproductive structures of the fungus, including spore-producing capsules that can release thousands of spores into the surrounding environment.
This looks to be a great event at the Royal Institute! 2 - 7 July. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=869447095226336&id=100064831592930

Last week at Science Club!
For those of us who missed the light show last week, looks like we're in luck and that the aurora borealis will be putting on another performance in a couple of weeks!
I hadn't realised how dangerous they can be though, with impacts on global communications, GPS and the national grid. Extreme space weather is rated 4 (of a maximum of 5) on the national risk register.

There will be bittersweet moments for me over the next few weeks, as my GCSE students finish with me and go on to bigger and better things! On the bright side I can start getting to know some of the lovely year 10s on my waiting list so I'll be putting together a new timetable for myself. If someone you know could benefit from a bit of help for their GCSEs next year (starting in June), do get in touch. Anyone know what this might be? Body length 2cm, each leg around the same. Outside my house.
Biology GCSE includes a section about gene therapy - this is a wonderful application of it!

Shared this one before, but thought it worthy of a second outing. Thanks for reminding me, Judith!

The link between two of my favourite things: Bowie and science. Turns out it only *looks* like there are spiders on Mars, and that the arachnid-type features are actually the effect of defrosted carbon dioxide. At between 45m to 1km wide, those spiders would have been pretty damn terrifying!
