✨ Tuition should never feel like a mystery. ✨

One of the things families often tell us they value most at Teatime Tutoring is the lesson report they receive after each session. Yes, a lesson report after every single lesson.

As a parent, it is not always easy to know what is really happening in your child's learning.

Was the lesson useful?
What did my child work on?
Where are the gaps?
What progress is being made?
What should we do next?

That is why, after lessons, we send clear feedback so parents can see what has been covered, what went well, and what the next steps are.

These reports are not just admin, they are part of the learning process.

We send them after every single lesson, not just once per term.

They help parents understand their child’s progress, give reassurance that tuition is targeted and purposeful, and make sure everyone is working together. Tuition is teamwork - student, tutor and family.

At Teatime Tutoring, we believe good tuition is about more than turning up for an hour. It is about careful planning, responsive teaching, communication, and a clear feedback loop between tutor, student and parent.

It may be hot, but here at Teatime Tutoring we adapt and use it to our advantage!

We have iced water for parents and children, hand-held fans for the students, and a shady, breezy garden setting for our lessons this week.

We may be slightly less physically active than in our usual lessons, but the learning still goes on. The children yesterday relished the chance to be outdoors, and it was calm, peaceful, focused and enjoyable.

It has made me even more excited for our summer groups, where we will be keeping lessons purposeful, engaging and confidence-building, whatever the weather.

Boggle!

You can't beat a bit of Boggle as a warm up game!

We change the rules depending on the age and level of who is playing. Sometimes we play where every letter you have used in a word counts as a point, sometimes we play where if another player has the same word as you, then you get zero points for that word. It's fine to change the rules in a game as long as you are clear what the rules are from the beginning!

What's your favourite word game?

In Boggle, I always find it's great for extending vocabulary. In one round I found 'oar' but that was a new word for my student, so were 'hem' and 'tee'.

Always learning, always having fun!

Recommended resource: Sudoku

Sudoku is such a simple but brilliant activity for children. It is not about complicated maths, but about logic, reasoning, careful checking and spotting patterns.

It helps children practise:

• concentrating for longer
• working systematically
• noticing mistakes
• using elimination
• thinking flexibly
• building resilience when something does not work straight away

These are all skills that support maths, verbal reasoning, problem-solving and exam technique.

Sudoku can be a lovely screen-free activity for the summer too. Start with smaller 4x4 or 6x6 grids for younger children, then gradually build up to the classic 9x9 version as confidence grows.

A few minutes a day can make a real difference to how children approach puzzles, patterns and problem-solving.

In the half term we travelled up north for a few days and took a card with us that needed posting. That card travelled all over the place with us! Finally we found a post box, but it was blue!!! Perhaps blue boxes are common up north and that is why it had taken so long for us to spot one - we had been looking for the traditional red post box.

Sometimes children can do exactly the same thing in lessons and exams. They may know a method, a word, a spelling pattern or a question type, but if it appears in a slightly different format, they do not always recognise it. They are looking for the “red post box”, and when the learning appears as a “blue post box”, they can feel unsure.

That is why tutoring is not just about teaching content. It is about helping children recognise skills in different contexts, apply their knowledge flexibly and build the confidence to think, “I know what this is, even if it looks a little different.”

At Teatime Tutoring, we help children spot the learning behind the disguise.

Have you ever failed to notice something right in front of you because it looked a bit different?
