Having been off for a few weeks enjoying the holidays with my family, I have eased back into work this week. I had some much needed admin/planning time on Monday and Tuesday - there are a few exciting things in the pipeline which I'm not quite ready to share yet. And, then I saw two lovely students today.

I LOVED getting back into teaching maths. Teaching maths to children who find it tricky is a very fulfilling part of my work. Today, we have been looking at:

✨Understanding how 5 can be made up of smaller numbers;
✨Spotting which "3"s are written the wrong way around; and
✨Using knowledge of addition using dice dot patterns as a gateway to understanding number lines.

I am also in the process of sorting out my September timetable and have some slots open in small group maths classes. Drop me a DM to find out more.

Thus is a great explanation and something I find to be true when working with children which is why we almost always learn about growth mindset alongside maths.

Of course, she is generalising about the majority and not talking about children who have barriers to learning including dyscalculia.

Here is another low prep activity idea for the summer holidays: blackberrying.

It is lots of fun and a clever way to disguise a walk. 😆 At the same time children will be practising/learning about:
✨dexterity;
✨large motor skills;
✨seasons and life cycle of plants; and
✨extending their vocabulary.

I'm planning to turn our blackberries into Eaton Mess. 🍨

PS Blackberry bushes are prickly and don't forget to risk assess for your children and your location. Don't pick berries at dog wee height! We don't eat any blackberries until we have taken them home and washed them. I wouldn't want my children thinking it is OK to take anything straight from the bush and put it in their mouth to guard against the possibility of them unwittingly eating something poisonous.

Does your child struggle with their pencil grasp?

The gold standard pencil grasp (right or left handed) is as shown in the photo and children are expected to have mastered it by the end of their reception year. Often this isn't the case, but in busy classrooms it can be difficult for time to be found to support the development of this important skill. An inefficient pencil grip can make writing harder, messier and tiring. 😔

I am holding a pencil grasp workshop on Thursday 27 August. Your child can join me to build essential skills through game, activities and crafts. Held in Littleworth near Faringdon.

How is your summer going?

A bit humdrum?
Fabulous?
A struggle?
Something else?

The photo makes mine look idyllic doesn't it? It shows a true moment with my family painting rocks at the beach and that moment was lovely. But what it doesn't show is me alone and crying on a drizzly beach a few hours earlier because I was fed up with constant teenage argumentativeness and negativity. My son even argued that he wasn't being argumentative!

So, just in case you need a reminder, I'm reminding you that what you see on social media is only part of the story. People share the fabulous stuff and I don't think it is because we/they are showing off: it is just nice to share the good stuff. But, humdrum, boring and a struggle are all part of life too. If that is you, that is OK. 😊

Here is another low-prep summer holiday activity that keeps children learning without them even realising.

*Reading aloud together*

As simple as that!

If your children are ready, you could choose a chapter book. Chose one that appeals to YOU as well as to your children. It could be:

📕a favourite from your own childhood;
📗a story set where you are holidaying;
📘a book based on a shared interest; or
📕simply something you fancy reading.

If you enjoy the book, your enthusiasm will be contagious. Children are far more likely to be drawn into a story when they can hear that you are enjoying it too.

There are short chapter books out there for children who aren't yet ready for longer stories e.g. Fantastic Mr Fox and The Wild Robot.

I still remember reading Hitler’s Canary to my two during a family holiday after Year 4 and Year 6. It was absolutely gripping and, if I’m honest, probably the best part of the holiday! It was supposed to be a cycling holiday… but my eldest had decided she no longer liked cycling. 🤦‍♀️

I’d love to hear your recommendations. Which books have been a hit as family read-alouds? 📚
