A child asked me yesterday, "How do I know if 15÷3=5 is division by grouping or division by sharing?"

I love it when children ask me questions like this which show their understanding and where to take their learning next. I also love that in small-group and 1:1 tuition we can take the time to answer these questions fully when they come up.

The answer and proof that my student and I worked on together is shown in the photos.

This shows deep understanding of maths at typical Year 2 / Year 3 level. Unfortunately, all too often children move through the primary school maths curriculum with just enough knowledge but not deep understanding. This can lead to rocky foundations which makes learning future maths harder than it needs to be.

I love that in small group and 1:1 maths lessons we can go off on a tangent and follow a child's curiosity.

We were investigating the four times table last week and one of my learners said that 12 couldn't be in the 4 times table because it was in the three times table. So we did a deep dive into why it is in both. 😊

I provide small-group and 1:1 maths tuition for children who excel at maths, those who find it tricky and everyone in between. I cover Reception to Year 4 and occasionally older children. Comment below or send me a DM to find out more.

I appreciate that not everybody loves maths. In fact, some children find maths tricky and can end up feeling quite anxious about it.

The way we are wired as humans makes it very difficult to learn new things when we are feeling anxious: you can't calmly access your thinking brain when you feel that way. That is why it is so important to me to help children become curious and confident to give it a go and explain their thinking.

Look at what one of my learners spontaneously wrote this week. Proud tutor moment!

Do you enjoy mindful colouring-in? When I was a child, it was definitely not my vibe. It was way too chill for me - I would rather be throwing a ball against the side of the house, baking a cake, that sort of thing.

If your child is not the type to enjoy quietly colouring in, they may well find handwriting practice a bit boring too. Nevermind, I can turn most things into a game.

One of my learners gets the credit for inventing this one though. Handwriting squares. Take turns to draw a line. The person who draws the last line in a square claims it, carefully writes a letter in their best handwriting and draws another line.

We had great fun.

Stand alone 1:1 lessons don't come up very often, but I have got a couple over the next few weeks whilst we settle into the new term.

They are suitable for:
⭐️children on the 1:1 waiting list;
⭐️Children who would like help with something in particular they are finding difficult at school;
⭐️help with school report next steps;
⭐️children who want to try out tutoring; and
⭐️existing learners who would like an extra lesson or a won off swap.

I specialise in supporting children aged about 4 to about 8 and older children working on skills and knowledge more often covered at this age.
