On Tuesday, the children were delighted to welcome a special visit from Ian Jones of AFC Porchester, who was joined by first-team striker Alfie Stanley. The session was a fantastic opportunity for the children to see highlights of Alfie’s goals from this season, sparking lots of excitement and curiosity.
The children asked a range of thoughtful questions, learning not only about Alfie’s journey in football but also about his interests away from the pitch. They were especially intrigued to discover that Alfie’s favourite place to eat is Nando’s, and that alongside his football career, he is also training to become an accountant!
It was an inspiring and enjoyable experience for all, offering a brilliant insight into both the sporting and personal sides of a professional athlete.

We are thrilled to share that Red Barn Community Primary School has been awarded the School Games GOLD Mark Award for the 2025/26 academic year!
The School Games Mark is a prestigious, government-led award, launched in 2012 and supported by the Youth Sport Trust. It recognises schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to providing high-quality sporting opportunities and fostering a culture of participation and competition both within school and across the wider community. We are incredibly proud to have achieved this recognition for our efforts.
This year has been a fantastic one for sport at Red Barn, with a wide range of opportunities and achievements, including:
- The establishment of both boys’ and girls’ football teams
- LTA Tennis lessons delivered to all 180 pupils
- Participation of 120 KS2 children in the Chance to Shine Cricket Programme
- Engagement in a variety of competitive and inclusive sports, including football, hockey, ultimate frisbee, cross country, rugby and dodgeball
- Exciting taster sessions in hip hop dance, athletics and archery
- An inspiring visit from a GB athlete
With over a third of our pupils representing the school in local inter-school competitions this year, we are immensely proud of their enthusiasm, commitment, and sportsmanship. We also wish to recognise the invaluable contributions of our young volunteers, leaders and officials, whose support helped make these events possible.
To achieve the Gold Mark, schools are assessed across key areas including participation, competition, workforce and clubs. This award is a reflection of the dedication and hard work shown by our entire school community.
A special thank you goes to Mr Prosser for his outstanding leadership of our sports programme, and to Mrs Brockwell for her tireless support with administration and transport.
We look forward to another exciting year of sport at Red Barn! 🏅

In October, our Year R children planted broad bean seeds, and it has been a joy to watch them thrive. Over the months, we’ve observed the plants grow tall, blossom beautifully, and eventually produce their very own pods, an exciting journey from seed to plate!
Last week, Year R and Year 1 carefully picked a pod each and explored what was inside, gently removing the beans with great curiosity and care. The empty pods were then returned to our woodland area to begin their next life as compost, helping to nurture future growth.
We were especially fortunate that our talented kitchen team prepared the freshly picked broad beans for lunchtime. It was wonderful to see every child give them a try, with many children discovering a new favourite vegetable!
This week, the children will be bringing home a pod to share this experience with their families and spread their enthusiasm for growing and tasting broad beans at home. 🌱

One of our talented Year 4 pupils has been exceptionally busy over the half term, achieving remarkable success at the Southampton Dance Festival. She competed in five solo performances and one duet, earning 1st place in her modern duet, and 3rd place in both her Musical Theatre solo (Truly Scrumptious) and her National solo (Tarantella).
She also reached the finals of the prestigious All England Dance competition, where she performed her Musical Theatre and National solos with confidence and precision, both executed flawlessly.
What an outstanding accomplishment! Congratulations - everyone at Red Barn is immensely proud of you and your dedication, talent, and hard work. 👏 💃 🏅
