Visibility Matters: High-visibility clothing is essential when working in areas with poor lighting around lift trucks. This short film, filmed at night, shows the difference between wearing white and high-visibility clothing.

Important Regulation: The Health and Safety at Work Act sets out one of the most important responsibilities in UK workplaces: employers must protect the health, safety, and welfare of their employees, so far as is reasonably practicable.
Safety isn’t a box‑ticking exercise — it’s a legal duty and the foundation of a healthy, productive workplace.

Maintenance Alert: A lift truck’s chains are measured during a thorough examination. Over time, they will gradually stretch. Stretching between 2 and 3% will result in a warning. Over 3% will fail the examination and will need to be replaced.

A pre-use inspection must be performed at the beginning of every day or shift. On the category B1 counterbalance and D1 reach truck, there are approximately 22 separate checks to make. Today, we are focusing on:

External Condition

Examine the general condition and security of the machine’s overhead guard, battery and engine covers, doors and panels should be complete, free from damage and secure. Inspect the bodywork for damage, rust, broken hinges or locks, damaged battery access panels etc. that would be detrimental to the truck’s safe operation. Windscreens, mirrors [if fitted], lights and warning devices should be in working order, clean, and free from damage. When walking around the truck, the operator should check on top of the mast section, tie bars, overhead guard, or cab, for articles, which may have been left there and could fall when the truck is operated. In addition, the operator should ensure there are no water, oil, or any other type of fluid leaks.

A working platform is for occasional non-scheduled use. The platform must be securely attached to the truck.

Important Regulation: Under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 (VERA), every vehicle used or kept on public roads — including forklift trucks — must be registered and taxed. The DVLA has the authority to issue fines or clamp vehicles that fail to comply.
