First words focus activity
🗣️ Builds vocabulary – introduces everyday words such as pig, bird, mummy, daddy, and apple.
👂 Supports listening skills – children hear a word repeatedly while looking at the actual picture.
🧠 Strengthens word–picture connections – helps children understand that a spoken word are also real objects, people, or actions.
💬 Encourages speech – flashcards can prompt children to attempt sounds, mimic words and eventually name pictures independently.
👀 Develops attention and recognition – looking at and identifying familiar pictures helps with concentration and visual recognition.
🤝 Encourages interaction – using the cards together creates opportunities for turn-taking, pointing, questions and conversation.
🔄 Makes repetition fun – repeated exposure helps children remember new words without it feeling like formal learning.
🌱 Supports early communication confidence – celebrating attempts, even when pronunciation isn’t perfect, encourages children to keep communicating.
This activity can also be adapted to a slightly older age by including colours and counting too.
