4 distinct snare drums: Gretsch, Premier, Pearl and Ludwig
4 distinct tunings, first run is high, second is medium, third is low and fourth is dampened with a studio ring.
This was a project I did with my student Jon Armstrong to evidence that, before anything else, the factor that contributes mostly to the sound is the tuning and attention.
Everything else comes second. Shell construction material, type of drum head, microphone, miking techniques, etc.
Tuning is 80%. Miss this step and no amount of maple, REMO, AKG and Neve compressors will save your soul from eternal damnation.🥵
