In this video, Carer - Nicola shares her personal journey into fostering with Care Visions, and how a long-standing familiarity with caring for children in her home life gradually led her to consider fostering more seriously.

Before fostering, Nicola worked with adults with disabilities, and her home was always full of family life, with nieces, nephews and children regularly around. Even so, she had natural doubts and questions about whether fostering would be the right fit for her.

She speaks honestly about those early uncertainties, and how attending the introduction sessions helped her feel more comfortable and relaxed as she learned more.

Nicola’s story is a reminder that feeling unsure at the beginning is completely normal, and that confidence often builds once you take that first step.

💭 What are your thoughts - how do we best support children to feel understood, without reinforcing shame?

We’re sharing a moment from a recent Care Visions Talks Family Talk: Spotlight featuring Gabor Maté - offering a perspective that may prompt reflection for those supporting children and young people.

In this clip, he speaks about shame and the importance of moving away from the idea that something is “wrong” with a child.
Instead, he suggests that some behaviours may be understandable responses to difficult or overwhelming environments.

This is one perspective within a wider conversation, but for foster carers, parents and practitioners, it connects with a trauma-informed and relationship-based approach.
