Progress with Rebecca - Retake your Maths GCSE Helping people who have failed their maths GCSE to retake the exam and pass with flying colours. Sign up and pay in advance for 4 weeks at a time.

From January 2023 I will be starting small maths tuition groups (maximum 4 students per group).
1) Year 7 students who need to gain confidence. Maybe they crammed for their sats at the end of Year 6 but have now lost confidence.
2) GCSE Year 11 Foundation students who are aiming to get a Grade 5.
3) GCSE Year 11 Higher students who are aiming to secure a Grade 7-8

As an adult, you have practical experiences outside of the classroom that provide you with a better understanding of how mathematical concepts are applied in everyday life.

You will have encountered situations where maths was relevant, such as managing finances, scaling up or down recipes, calculating distances for travel, or working out how much paint you need for a redecorating project.

These real-world applications enhance your comprehension of mathematical concepts and make studying for the GCSE exam much more relatable.

Do you have a child who could do with support with their maths?

There are now less than 20 weeks until the first maths GCSE exam on 19th May 2023. This is a typical Foundation level GCSE question. Could you find the values of x and y?
(Answer at the end of the post!)

7x + 2y = 36
3x + 2y = 16
(3 marks)

Maths tuition starting w/c 9th January, school days, after school.
Each session 1 hour.
Maximum per group is 4 students.
Cost is £20/student/hour

Solution to the above simultaneous equations question.
Subtract the whole of the second equation from the first equation so you get 4x = 20. This means that x = 5.
Then substitute x = 5 back into either of the equations.
Substituting x = 5 into the second equation 15 + 2y = 16
Subtract 15 from both sides so 2y = 1 so a single y = 0.5

Firstly, huge apologies to anyone who has asked me a question through a comment. I cannot actually see my comments and I have no idea why! So apologies if you have been ignored. Until I figure it out, please email me directly if you have a question.
Secondly, as a result of interest expressed, I will also make tuition groups available for year 8 and year 10 students from January. As with the Y7 and foundation and higher Y11 groups, they will run after school during the week at my house which is 5 mins walk from Bartholomew School. Please email me to register your interest.

Is maths your child’s least favourite subject at school?

At all ages, having the confidence and the resilience to ‘have a go’ is so helpful in maths. That is why I really like this exercise that I did with my year 7 students (c.11yrs old) last week. It was part of consolidating their knowledge of ‘Order of Operations’, what some might remember as BIDMAS or BODMAS. There is no trick to working it out, you just need to spend a bit of time trying different options. Can you make the calculations work?
