Next week we will be raising money for Children in Need.
Please feel free to wear anything spotty all week.
It's and we wanted to remind you of our impact programme focused specifically on children's mental health, A Million and Me.
It is thought that up to 1 million children in the UK have a diagnosable mental health condition. This, coupled with the fact 1 in 4 adults are affected by a mental health condition every year, means early intervention to support mental wellbeing is vital.
That's where BBC Children in Need's A Million and Me programme, supported by Boots UK, comes in.
Director of the project, Paddy Sloan, has written a blog about how A Million and Me is helping young people:
"It’s a tricky time in life, moving from primary to secondary school and becoming a teenager. Sometimes we can feel sad or worried and we don’t always know why, or if we do we aren’t sure what to do about it. Sharing our feelings at those times can really help – with a friend, someone in your family or another person that you trust in your community.
"A Million & Me is a funding programme designed to encourage those conversations, at an early stage before those feelings have a chance to develop into more established mental health concerns. With a budget of £10million, A Million & Me will support organisations to provide the skills and knowledge needed for parents, children and trusted adults to open conversations and to listen effectively. We want to ensure that children aged 8-13 have the support they need, when, where and how they want it, to explore their feelings before problems emerge.
"At BBC Children in Need, we fund some 2,800 projects all over the UK and most of these (94%) have 8-13 year olds in their group. Whether it’s a boxing coach, a youth worker or a local volunteer, they can offer reassurance and guidance because they have a positive and trusted relationship with the child. A Million & Me aims to build on those relationships, alongside those with parents, carers and other children to encourage a big conversation about how we are feeling and to have the right skills available to make that a positive experience.
"Children shouldn’t feel alone when they are down – lots of others are feeling the same way and there is a lot of kindness and care available to help them through. A Million & Me aims to create the confidence and knowledge among children and adults to tap into those resources and help children deal with the challenges they face."
