What matters is this:
The ending changes
how we see the story.
It deepens something.
Reveals something.
Or makes us understand
why this moment mattered.
That’s often far more powerful
than a surprise ending.

Good dialogue usually has a purpose.
It might:
- reveal character
- create tension
- move the scene forward

❌ Bad exposition:
“Hello sister.
As you know,
we’ve lived here for fifteen years.”

Nobody speaks that way.

✅ Instead:
SARAH:
“You’re still keeping that awful wallpaper?”
JAMES:
“Mum liked it.”
“SARAH:
“She’s been gone fifteen years.”

The information feels natural
because it emerges through conflict.

✨ Free Online Flash Fiction Course – Looking for Beta Testers ✨

Would you like free access to a brand-new online flash fiction writing course?

We’re looking for a small group of writers to take part in the beta test of our new Flash Fiction course.

The course is delivered online, allowing you to work through the materials at your own pace while receiving personalised feedback on your writing.

Over four modules, you’ll learn:
• What flash fiction is and how it works
• How to create compelling characters and conflict in a very small space
• Techniques for writing flash fiction at different lengths
• How to edit and refine your work
• Where to submit and publish flash fiction

By the end of the course, you’ll have completed three pieces of flash fiction and developed practical skills you can use in future writing projects.

Successful applicants will receive:
• Free access to the full online course
• Personalised feedback on their writing
• Guidance from an award-winning author and creative writing lecturer
• Early access before the course launches publicly

Suitable for both newer writers and experienced writers looking to explore flash fiction.

In return, we’ll ask participants to:
• Work through the course materials
• Complete the writing activities
• Provide honest feedback on their experience

Places are limited, and I’ll be selecting a small number of writers from the applications received.

If you’d like to be considered, please message us for the application form.

Applications close on June 12th 2026.

If you are writing your first book you need to read these first… My most influential books when I was getting started.

Seth’s been collecting writing prompts again…
Six jars. Six prompts. Each one waiting for the right person to pick it.
Choose a number from 1–6 – go with your instinct.

Happy writing.

Jar Prompt 1
A stranger knocks. You let them in.
You can’t leave until you tell them something – you just don’t know what.

Jar Prompt 2
You’re walking home at dusk.
An eight-foot scarecrow stands in a field – and hundreds of crows are gathered around it, perfectly still.
What’s really happening here?

Jar Prompt 3
You’re in the library late at night.
Where the exit should be, there’s now a wall of books – all of them about you.
What do they say?

Jar Prompt 4
You’ve been invited to speak at a prestigious conference.
As you look out from the stage, you realise the entire audience is made up of the same person.
Why are they here?

Share part of your story in the comments… and let us guess which prompt you chose.
