Did you know that some of the best preparation for school looks just like play?

Many of the skills that help children feel confident when they start school develop naturally through everyday play and experiences at home.

Try simple activities such as:

✏️ Recognising and spotting their name.
🔢 Counting toys, stairs or pieces of fruit.
🎨 Colouring, drawing and making marks.
🧩 Playing with playdough or threading activities.
✂️ Building hand strength through cutting, sticking and creative play.

At nursery, these experiences are woven into each day through purposeful play, helping children build confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.

Sometimes the little things really do make the biggest difference.

School readiness isn't about children being able to do everything on their own. It's about having the confidence to give things a go, ask for help when they need it and feel proud of their achievements.

There are lots of simple ways to encourage independence at home:
🚽 Encouraging toilet routines throughout the day.
🥪 Practising opening lunchboxes and snack pots.
🍽️ Letting your child carry their own plate to the table.
🧼 Supporting handwashing and dressing themselves.
🎒 Giving them little responsibilities, such as packing their nursery bag or putting their shoes by the door.

At nursery, we know that independence grows through everyday moments. From pouring their own drink to putting on their coat, these small achievements help children build confidence, resilience and a real sense of "I can do it".

Because school readiness isn't about doing everything perfectly, it's about feeling ready to take the next step. ✨
