RPD in a nutshell🧤⚽️

One of the most rewarding parts of 1-to-1 goalkeeper coaching is seeing a goalkeeper recognise a scenario they’ve previously worked on, and then execute it when it actually matters.

This weekend, Jack stepped up an age group to play U11s for Exeter City against Aston Villa, producing two blocks from scenarios we had specifically worked through together just days earlier. It’s always great to hear these things from parents after games following our sessions!

The real positive wasn’t simply making the saves. It was seeing the coaching points transfer into a live game, with Jack making the right decisions and executing the technique under pressure, in 16ft x 7ft 9-a-side goals.

That’s the purpose of representative practice design: creating practices that prepare goalkeepers for the demands they will actually face in games.

Brilliant work, Jack. 👏🧤

🧤 GOOD LUCK, SAM! 🔴⚪

A big good luck to Sam Down as he represents Exeter City U18s today against Gillingham in the EFL Youth Alliance League! 💪

Sam has worked consistently with GKDC throughout the summer, putting in the work, embracing every challenge and continuing to develop his game between the sticks.

It’s fantastic to see more of Sam’s journey of his scholarship this season. 👏

Go well Sam! 🧤⚽️

The voice of a goalkeeper coach 🧤

One of the biggest responsibilities we have as goalkeeper coaches is understanding that our words don’t just disappear when the session ends.

I still hear my goalkeeper coach’s voice when I train and play.

The reminders, the encouragement, the explanations, they stay with you because they were connected to moments of learning. They helped shape how you see the game, solve problems and respond under pressure.

This is why at GKDC we place huge importance on concurrent instruction and concurrent praise.

Concurrent instruction is the process of providing information during the action, not just before or after it.

Instead of stopping a goalkeeper every time something needs changing, we aim to help them adapt in the moment by giving relevant information while they are experiencing the problem.

For example:

❌ “You dropped backwards. Step forward more.”

✅ During the action: “Stay forward… attack the space… be brave with your movement.”

The goalkeeper receives information while their perception, decision-making and movement are still active.

When combined with concurrent praise, the message afterwards becomes even more powerful:

✅ “Great step forward, that early movement gave you more time and helped you stay balanced.”

The goalkeeper doesn’t just hear that they succeeded, they understand the behaviour that created the outcome.

There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing from the families who trust us with their goalkeeper’s development.

Every testimonial shared over the coming days is from a parent whose child has been part of the GKDC Programme. From building confidence and improving technique to transferring what is learnt in training into matchday performances, these are the stories that mean the most to us.

Thank you to every player and parent who continues to support the programme. Your feedback drives us to keep raising the standard for our goalkeepers 🧤🩵💜

🧤 Pre-season is almost over… but goalkeeper development shouldn’t stop there.

As teams move into the competitive season, training naturally shifts towards tactical preparation, match planning and team-based practices. This often means less time is available for the individual, position-specific development that goalkeepers need. Research and guidance from organisations such as the FA and UEFA consistently highlight that goalkeepers have unique technical, tactical and psychological demands that require specialist coaching alongside team training.

That’s where we come in.

At GKDC, our sessions are carefully curated to complement your child’s club training, providing dedicated goalkeeper-specific coaching that many team sessions simply don’t have the time to deliver.

Our practices are designed to:
🧤 Build confidence through progressive, game-realistic challenges.
⚽ Accelerate technical development with purposeful, position-specific coaching.
🧠 Improve decision-making using representative practice that transfers to match day.
📈 Help every goalkeeper continue developing throughout the season, not just during pre-season.

If you’re looking to ensure your child continues to progress while enjoying their football, we’d love to help.
