Animation to explain EMDR therapy to Children 18/04/2026

My brain is still buzzing after an incredible week of training! 🌪️➡️☀️
I’ve spent the last few days diving deep into EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) specifically for children and adolescents. It’s hard to put into words how powerful this modality is for shifting deep-seated trauma, quietening the voice of shame, and helping kids find their confidence again.
I was particularly moved by its effectiveness with ARFID and anxiety—areas where traditional talk therapy can sometimes hit a wall. Seeing the science and the heart behind this approach has been so validating.
I’m feeling incredibly energized and ready to start this new chapter! I can't wait to see the impact these tools will have for my young clients as they move toward healing and resilience. 🧠✨
Curious about how EMDR works?
This short video does a great job of explaining the process:

Starting school is a huge milestone—but for parents of children with SEN (Special Educational Needs), it can feel like a mountain to climb. 🏔️

How do you make sure a busy teacher knows that your child needs a "Now/Next" board, or that they’re terrified of the hand dryer? ✋🚫

Answer: The SEN Passport. 📄✨

It’s a "cheat sheet" for your child’s teacher that covers:
✅ What makes them smile
✅ Their specific sensory triggers
✅ The "quick wins" for their learning
✅ Vital safety info

Don’t let your child’s needs get lost in the paperwork. Create a one-page profile that speaks for them when you aren’t there.

Does your "Internal Smoke Alarm" feel stuck on high alert today? 🚨

When we are overwhelmed, our brains often try to solve everything at once—including the things we have absolutely no power over. We ruminate on the past, worry about other people’s opinions, or try to predict the future.

In my Exeter practice, I call this "carrying the world in your circle."

For neurodivergent people, this leads to a full "Sensory Cup" and total burnout. The secret to finding a bit of calm isn't doing more; it’s identifying what you can actually influence.

Look at the inner circle in the image. 🫧

Today, I am choosing to focus only on my own boundaries and how I treat myself. Everything else stays in the outer circle for now.

I’ve created a 5-page "Control Toolkit" (including a worksheet and info sheet) to help you map this out for yourself. If you’d like a free copy, just comment "CONTROL" below and I’ll send it over to your inbox! 🌿

In my work as a counsellor here in Exeter, I often talk about the "Watchman" in our brain. For neurodivergent individuals, that internal smoke alarm can go off for "burnt toast" (like a loud noise or a change in plans) just as loudly as it would for a "house fire."

Understanding this is the first step toward self-compassion. It’s not a character flaw; it’s a sensitive alarm system!

I'm curious—what’s a "burnt toast" moment that sets off your internal alarm? Let’s chat in the comments. 👇
