What’s on at Drakes Farm this week?

Weekend Farm School on Saturday 19th September 9.45-12:00 noon.
Our weekend farm school is designed for children up to 9 years old.
The morning includes meeting & looking after our farm animals, followed by crafts, messy play & STEM activities & challenges.

What is Farmer Jack doing? Watch the video to see if you can guess what this machine is doing!

Farmer Jack has been cultivating the soil to prepare it for planting. This process involves:

- Breaking up soil lumps so seeds can grow easily
- Introducing oxygen and mixing the soil to help useful microbes thrive
- Loosening the soil to improve air and water flow

He finished the process by using a drill to plant seeds at the correct depth.

This year, Jack is planting a special mixture of seeds for a grazable winter cover crop. These seeds require sunlight, water, and a good bed of soil to grow. The cover crop includes a mix of different plant species that each serve a unique purpose:

- Westerwold grass & turnips: Grows quickly, scavenges leftover nitrogen, and holds onto it until grazed.
- Tillage and fodder radish: Grows deep to break up soil compaction and brings nutrients from lower soil structures to the surface.
- Crimson and Alsike clover: Legumes that absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix it into the soil for future crops, while also providing high protein for grazing animals.

Due to a forage shortage this year, the main purpose of this crop, is to be strip-grazed through the winter and early spring.

If you are booked for the Little Farmers autumn block, you can watch these seeds grow in the field next to our sessions!

We had a very busy Sunday!

We woke up today looking forward to heading out to a family Christening. However, the cattle had other ideas—some decided to walk through a hedge and go on a bit of a walkabout, so Colin and I headed out in search of them.
We fed all of the animals including the cafe stock and headed off. 🐷🐮🦆

Despite the rocky start, we had a lovely afternoon with family. On the way home, we just had to stop off to repair a puncture on the Discovery 😜🤣🥴☀️

A lovely local event…

It was lovely to start our Autumn term of Little Farmers yesterday!

This week’s theme is growing, and our activities include planting rainbow chard seeds.

Our farm features:

- Plenty of outdoor space for exploring and visiting the animals
- A covered outdoor area for themed messy play
- Indoor areas for interactive challenges and crafts
- Refreshments available on-site daily from Ruby, including hot and cold drinks, local cakes, tray bakes, and cookies

Our attendance is currently lower than expected for our Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday sessions. If you would like to try a pay-as-you-go session to help support us, we would be delighted to welcome you.

We have plenty of space on our Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday Little Farmers for the next 5 weeks- please spread the word of what we have to offer for young families.

We particularly need more participants for Thursdays sessions in order to make the session viable. 🙏🤗

Whats on a Drakes Farm this Autumn?

- Little Farmers starting 8th Sep
Come enjoy being at our farm - a relaxed, fun, welcoming weekly session for young children (& their grown ups) . Our Little Farmers Session includes looking after our animals, followed by a weekly learning theme with crafts and messy play activities around this theme. We finish our session with a fruit snack and drink. This is a 5 week block of sessions.

- Weekend Farm School
Saturday 19th September 10 - 12:00 noon - Our Weekend ‘One Off’ Farm School Sessions are design for children aged 3 to 9 years.
This morning includes meeting and looking after our farm animals, followed by crafts, messy play, and STEM activities & challenges. We finish our session with a fruit snack and drink.

- Halloween at Drakes Farm
Halloween themed morning sessions: A fantastic event with lots of themed messy play, crafts, activities and a story aimed at children from 18months up to the age of approximately 8 years old. The perfect Halloween event for younger children!

- Welcome to Father Christmas
Join us for an evening with Father Christmas. This special evening allows children to partake in a wide range of Christmas activities, messy play and crafts. They will also have time to meet Father Christmas, and enjoy songs and a story around the Christmas Tree with him.

- Winter Birthday Parties at Drakes Farm NEW for 2026!
Fancy a Messy Play and Craft Party at Drakes Farm—available November to March! Partygoers can enjoy playing on site with our toys and space then dip into a range of age-appropriate crafts and messy play.
