Since this lovely positive comment in November, I have advised and supported several more families and schools, following diagnosis by the team at EPIC. Such a satisfying role!

Kate Parker, our Education Support Adviser, has been working with a number of EPIC families through our bridging support package into schools.

Feedback has been unanimously positive, including this comment from a primary school SENCO.

Kate is able to translate the findings of our assessments into the school setting and help to explore support and adaptations.

If you would like more information about how Kate can help please contact [email protected].

Delighted to be working with this superb team. Especially pleased that we are now able to offer on-going interventions to help support and develop young people with dyslexia.

The theme of 2025 Dyslexia Awareness Week is focussing on the voices of young people with dyslexia, their stories, challenges and successes: https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/support-us/awareness-events

EPIC have the expertise to assess for dyslexia, and where appropriate other associated neurodevelopmental difficulties.

EPIC also have Kate Parker, our Education Support Adviser, who has huge expertise in dyslexia and can provide both bridging support into schools and individualised intervention.

I am delighted to be joining this inspirational, dedicated multi-agency team.
We met when both presenting at an education festival earlier this year. I was impressed by their “can do” approach and positive “all-round” focus on helping 0-25 year olds and their families.

When I first meet children and young people, I try to keep them unaware that they are being “assessed”. We have a couple of “getting to know you” sessions, where we chat and play. One of the pleasures of SEND teaching is that very often in 1:1 or small groups we are playful. Games, drawing, rhymes are, without doubt, the best approach.

“The evidence supporting learning through play’s positive impact on child development is strong. Yet many education systems have reduced opportunities for playful learning and increased emphasis on didactic and structured approaches to learning for school readiness and achievement (Jay & Knaus, 2018). This recalibration is needless, as experts have established that learning through play supports the development of early literacy and numeracy skills in an integrated approach, while also cultivating children’s social, emotional, physical, and creative skills (Marbina, Church & Tayler, 2011)"

Today is in the UK.
2 out of 30 children are living with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) - a lifelong condition that most people don’t know about.

Every aspect of their life is affected. They struggle to understand instructions at school, but can’t express this to their teacher and often get in trouble. They finds it difficult to make friends due to difficulties communicating and expressing and feel alone.

Without the right support, young people with DLD can face ongoing challenges with their emotional well-being.

We need to be more aware of this condition and work to educate families, teachers and support services in addressing these needs.

So proud of my students who are starting new schools, classes or Year 7 this week. Some are going off boosted with confidence and won’t be coming back to me. I have taken on the role of Assistant Head- Inclusion and SENCO at a fantastic diverse and friendly 5-16 school in Exeter. Exciting times!

The best sort of post-it note to send home with a year 6 student preparing for the move to secondary school in September…👏
