Top of the Crest
This little goldcrest was busy fluttering around the wheel arch of the car. Eating bugs splattered on the bonnet or checking out its reflection? I normally see goldcrests flitting about conifer branches above me. This was the first time I'd been able to get a clear picture of the top of the goldcrest's head with its distinctive stripe. Luckily the bird was safely in a bush before the car drove off!

Legless Lizard
Another creature that has just come out of hibernation is this slow worm. I found it tucked horizontally along a fence batten, soaking up some sun. Once down on the ground it was quick to twist its way down the steps to hide under the bluebells. I'm hoping it is feasting on the slugs in the garden!

Coming out of hibernation.
I found this newt at the front of our house under a stack of wood. Newts hibernate during the winter and emerge in March ready for the breeding season. I took this newt up to our pond. It should find plenty to feed on in our garden- newts eat insects, caterpillars, worms and slugs.

Frog Spawn.
Checked our little pond this morning and I was so pleased to see a huge mass of frog spawn glistening in the sunlight. Let's hope we get some froglets this year.

I enjoyed doing the Big Garden Birdwatch last weekend. It was great to see so many birds at our feeders and in the trees. Really pleased to see a male and female blackcap and to find we had a pair of robins ( we usually only see one) and blackbirds. Plenty of space for them to start building nests soon. I also saw magpies, wood pigeons, blue t**s, great t**s, lots of house sparrows and a chaffinch.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2023
Please join in and spend an hour counting the birds in your garden, from your balcony or local park. The totals will help the RSPB monitor bird numbers and help protect species in the future.
These are some of the birds that we see in our garden.

New Year in the New Forest
We spent our New Year's Eve in the New Forest in our campervan. What a wonderful place to welcome 2023; waking up surrounded by trees and birds. Stunning sunsets and a clear Moon shining down on us. The New Forest is great for walking and cycling with lots of trails to explore. It is hundreds of years old and a mix of pine, fir, oak, beech, silver birch with heathland covered in heather and gorse. Look out for deer deep in the forest and ponies everywhere, roaming free.

Winter Solstice
Today marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Plenty of sunshine at Exminster Marshes and the beautiful kingfisher gleaming in the light seems a good omen. Not a bleak midwinter.

Coconut ice
It was so cold the other morning that the magpie had ice on its tail feathers. Please remember to feed the birds during this cold weather.
