Mental Health Awareness Week
This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme was ‘Action’, focusing on the practical steps we can take to support positive mental health and wellbeing. In school, we linked this important message to Article 24 of the UNCRC, which highlights every child’s right to the best possible physical and mental health.
As part of the week’s activities, we explored how sound and music can positively affect our emotions, bodies, and overall wellbeing. The children learnt about the science of sound, including sound waves and frequencies, and discovered how different sounds can create different feelings and emotions.
Mr Davies introduced the children to a variety of instruments and explained how each one produces sound in unique ways. The children reflected thoughtfully on how the sounds made them feel — calm, happy, relaxed, excited, or focused — and discussed why certain sounds can influence our emotions and mood.
We also linked this learning to our school’s ‘10 a Day’ wellbeing activities and our ongoing work around children’s rights and emotional wellbeing.
The experience connected strongly with Article 31 of the UNCRC, which reminds us that children have the right to rest, relaxation, and play. Through this calm and sensory experience, the children were encouraged to slow down, reflect, and enjoy moments of peace and mindfulness that support healthy minds and positive wellbeing.

Some top tips for all our Year 6 pupils who will be taking their SATs this coming week!
At Doddi, children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do, shaping both our learning and our school community. This term, our commitment to being a Rights Respecting school came alive in a truly memorable way, as pupils embarked on the exciting journey of creating their very own Rights Song.
We were thrilled to welcome Gaz from Gaz Music Solutions, who inspired pupils with fascinating insights into careers in the music industry. His visit sparked creativity across the school, as children worked collaboratively to write meaningful lyrics reflecting the importance of respect, equality and every child’s right to be heard.
The excitement didn’t stop there. Pupils were then given the incredible opportunity to visit a professional music studio in Dawlish, an experience generously funded by Friends of Doddi.
Stepping into a real recording environment was an unforgettable experience. Pupils recorded instrumental sections, including a beautiful bassoon part performed by Eloise, alongside several children from across the school playing chords on the ukulele. Every pupil, from Reception to Year 6, contributed their voices, coming together to create a truly inclusive and powerful final piece.
The studio buzzed with energy, confidence and pride as pupils watched their ideas come to life. This project has not only deepened their understanding of children’s rights, but has also provided a valuable insight into music production and the importance of teamwork.
We are immensely proud of their creativity, enthusiasm and the powerful message captured in their final song. Please clcik on the link to hear our school song.
