The reformer machines are the most recognisable and popular pieces of equipment we have in our studio.
The reformer consists of a moving carriage and a row of springs with differing tensions. The carriage can be moved with the loops using a pulley system. We have loops that can be used either for feet or hands, depending on the exercise. The footbar can be adjusted to move up or down. As the name gives away, we often use it with our feet during footwork, but it can also be useful for hand placement when performing other moves.
Why do we use the reformer?
The reformer is popular because not only is it fun to use, but it’s a fantastic way to move our bodies in a low-impact, targeted way. Depending on the exercise and spring tension, we can use it to resist our movements, loading the muscles or we can use it for support, aiding movement.
The reformer was originally created by Joseph Pilates for clients who needed extra support. Today, they’re multifunctional and can create challenging and purposeful workouts or flowing, full-body sequences.
