I've even seen bookings opening for Santa's Grotto 🧑‍🎄

Can Christmas ever be talked about too soon?

I'm sorry for those who think it's too soon. But I have a very important reason for mentioning it.

For the first time in the five years I've been running My Tutoring for You, I won't be working October half term or the Christmas holidays.

So now I've blocked out my calendar and made it public, I need your help.

Where are good places to get away for a few days in the colder months? Looking for places within a few hours of Kent/London. Bonus points for being dog friendly.

In Jenga, there's always that point of no return.

Everyone is causally playing and laughing until the pieces get harder to move as it starts to wobble. Any moment now it's going to come down - tension builds.

However, despite it swaying, you still have to choose a piece to remove. All you can do is hope it isn't on your go that it falls.

Learning can be a bit like Jenga.

It can feel wobbly, lead to overwhelm and apprehension and can cause pressure to build. Waiting for that dreaded moment you get asked a question in front of others, having no idea to what to write or do, not wanting to ask for help.

Unlike Jenga, learning isn't over when the tower falls.

If your child is feeling nervous about going back to school in September, avoids learning at home, seems to forget things they've only just learnt, or has started saying things like, "I can't do it," it could simply be a sign that some of their learning foundations aren't as secure as they need to be.

Sometimes, rebuilding those foundations is all it takes to unlock their confidence again and to make progress they were always capable of making.

Brilliant fun creating a sea monster that:

Has laser eyes.
Has tentacles all around it.
Drips poison if anything comes close.
Is found in the deepest, darkest caves.

These small activities have a big impact. I use them to help create ideas, to develop vocabulary and to become excited about writing.

They certainly inspired some brilliant descriptive phrases. I was buzzing with how amazing they did!

I can honestly say I found reading hard as a child. I only read books around my hobby. As I've gotten older, I find it more enjoyable and relaxing.

Sometimes tutoring comes to a natural end.

It's hard not to be sad because I love building great relationships with my students.

But it is also bitter sweet when you know it's because they don't need you anymore.

I love the process of tutoring, seeing how much students grow in confidence and independence.

So goodbye J, it's been an absolute privilege! I wish you all the best on your new adventures - I know you'll smash it.
