It is hard to sum this week up. An emotional rollercoaster! 🫣🎢

These four thirteen years old girls have been through a great deal and learnt so much. Both on the pitch and about themselves. We’ve seen them dancing, singing, laughing and weeping inconsolably. Hugging them when they’re all crying is heart breaking I have discovered! It has been quite a journey in forty degree heat and against girls mostly a couple of years older! 🦸🏼‍♀️👊🏻

I could talk about the girls individually but it really was a collective effort. Three years of training together, months of helping each other prepare and the four of them driving each other on to be better. I saw them all week helping each other, hugging anyone who looked sad, running to get their mates water and sprinting onto the pitch to congratulate them if they did something great. And this ethos was true of the whole team. Brilliantly led and coached it was such a positive experience and you could see everyone looking after our girls from coaches to their team mates and other parents. It felt like they were in such a great place to be supported and grow. Thank you to everyone involved but especially to the awesome foursome of Oliver Benjamin Delia, Justin and Hugo for all the care they so obviously took with them. Really grateful!🙏🏻😍

The girls are wrecked but when the dust settles I hope they are immensely proud of all they achieved. It is great to see the level and where you match up to it and I’m certain they will want to come back in two years’ time and go again. My main hope at the start was that they come away excited by the experience and I am certain that is the case. GB will need them again in two years. 💪🏻🧨

Thank you to their parents for committing to this slightly leftfield cause and to their coaches back home who have helped get them ready. They were such a credit to our club all week and I’m so excited to watch them and others continue this GB journey we’re now on! Girls we are so very proud of you. ❤️🥰

It is fitting that for our 200th post, that we get to talk about these girls making their GB debut. People don’t see how hard they have worked to make it and honestly we couldn’t be prouder. GB is not the be all and end all of what we do at Epsom but it is lovely to see these girls experience their first international tournament and enjoy it so much. 🥳🥏

Yesterday they had a tough lost to Italy but bounced back to beat a good Swiss team. Watching the progression over the day was wonderful. Led by the amazing Oliver Benjamin and supported by his awesome we are so happy with the set up for their first GB run out. With Delia, Hugo and Justin they have the best coaching group. ❤️🙏🏻

Girls we are so proud of you and all the hard work you have put in to achieve this. You represent our club so well but also your country as well. We will be there screaming today. Apologies in advance. 😬🫣

Here are the real legends. 5 days at summer camp with 100% attendance. A lot of baking toil in the sun, working on their game. These guys have played 35 hours (or more!) of frisbee this week and it is not a coincidence that you will see plenty of them playing GB down the line!

This is Elsie. ❤️

For some months Elsie has come every week to frisbee and very tentatively moved around the pitch like if she makes a wrong move, something terrible might happen. She’s always had fun but also often looked nervous. 👀

One day recently I saw her win her sports day sprint race at school and I was totally blown away by her speed. Why can’t we get her running like that on the frisbee pitch? Turns out, like a lot of girls we coach, that confidence plays a huge part in her performance. Today at summer camp it was noticeable how much she was taking off around the place and scoring goals. She is tall, fast and great to throw to. Was great to watch. 🏃🏻‍♀️💨

Today in our adults/older kids game at evening training, she came over to me unprompted and asked if she could join in. None of her friends playing, all the older people on pitch, quite a bold move. Is this the same Elsie? She came on and bombed around the place with no issues at all. Like she always had been there. Just amazing. 👊🏻

I think the hardest and yet most rewarding thing about coaching kids, is never knowing how long it might take to break through something with them. Sometimes you don’t because things are so multi layered and complicated. And progress is never linear but swings up and down all the time. Sometimes though, an awesome young person backs themself in front of you and it’s the best thing you get to see in ages. You often don’t know why but there it is and it’s so exciting. 😍

For all the Elsies out there, quietly growing in confidence and feeling comfortable in themselves, enjoying whatever hobby they love, we salute you! You made our day today Elsie! 🥰🥏
