MUMS’ FRISBEE SESSIONS HAVE COME TO EPSOM!!!

Last week the most amazing thing happened. We hosted a mums’ beginner session and due to the hard work of Jessica Wannenburg’s recruitment we had an amazing 18 ladies show up. 3 experienced coaches and 15 women who wanted to give frisbee a go. In 25 years of playing I’ve never seen anything like it. Lots have attempted such an event over the years but Jess you really made it happen! Incredible.

A whole host of these awesome ladies are coming back today for round two with our amazing female coaches. A lot said the same thing. That finding a fun and relaxed team sport to keep fit was hard to find and this just resonated with them. I knew this club has so much to offer the local community but thanks to Philippa Hackett for the idea and Jess for the drive to give us another offering! So good to see it unfold.

1.30-3.30. Saturdays. Epsom Cricket Club.

30 out tonight. A great session led by James and enjoyed by everyone. Special mention the 50 + year old legend laying out hard in the first drill and showing the kids how it’s done! Great to have Raf out for his first Epsom session as well, Jess taking the plunge into the Friday night arena after some successful tournament outings and lovely to see Ben back out playing after a tough period injured on the sideline. Let’s go Epsom!!!!

This Saturday, we have our normal training session 1.30-3.30 at Epsom Sports Club also accompanied by a “mum’s intro to ultimate frisbee” session. Run by Philippa Hackett who is a long time GB player and coach (and also a local mum!), it is aimed to encourage some of the mums in the club to give it a go. And some of their friends! Safety in numbers and all that!!! 🥰 Plus there is a bar for afterwards! 🍾🥂

This was originally suggested by Jessica Wannenburg who has gone from a totally new player whose daughter plays at the club, to now playing her second tournament on Sunday. With her and Philippa leading the way, we’re hoping we can get a few more local ladies playing! If you’re a local mum (or dad or neither!) then feel free to get involved for a low key introduction to ultimate frisbee!

It is hard to sum this week up. An emotional rollercoaster! 🫣🎢

These four thirteen years old girls have been through a great deal and learnt so much. Both on the pitch and about themselves. We’ve seen them dancing, singing, laughing and weeping inconsolably. Hugging them when they’re all crying is heart breaking I have discovered! It has been quite a journey in forty degree heat and against girls mostly a couple of years older! 🦸🏼‍♀️👊🏻

I could talk about the girls individually but it really was a collective effort. Three years of training together, months of helping each other prepare and the four of them driving each other on to be better. I saw them all week helping each other, hugging anyone who looked sad, running to get their mates water and sprinting onto the pitch to congratulate them if they did something great. And this ethos was true of the whole team. Brilliantly led and coached it was such a positive experience and you could see everyone looking after our girls from coaches to their team mates and other parents. It felt like they were in such a great place to be supported and grow. Thank you to everyone involved but especially to the awesome foursome of Oliver Benjamin Delia, Justin and Hugo for all the care they so obviously took with them. Really grateful!🙏🏻😍

The girls are wrecked but when the dust settles I hope they are immensely proud of all they achieved. It is great to see the level and where you match up to it and I’m certain they will want to come back in two years’ time and go again. My main hope at the start was that they come away excited by the experience and I am certain that is the case. GB will need them again in two years. 💪🏻🧨

Thank you to their parents for committing to this slightly leftfield cause and to their coaches back home who have helped get them ready. They were such a credit to our club all week and I’m so excited to watch them and others continue this GB journey we’re now on! Girls we are so very proud of you. ❤️🥰

The second photo is my favourite. Four mates loving their best life. These are the memories I hope live long for them. They certainly will for us. ❤️👭🏼

It is fitting that for our 200th post, that we get to talk about these girls making their GB debut. People don’t see how hard they have worked to make it and honestly we couldn’t be prouder. GB is not the be all and end all of what we do at Epsom but it is lovely to see these girls experience their first international tournament and enjoy it so much. 🥳🥏

Yesterday they had a tough lost to Italy but bounced back to beat a good Swiss team. Watching the progression over the day was wonderful. Led by the amazing Oliver Benjamin and supported by his awesome we are so happy with the set up for their first GB run out. With Delia, Hugo and Justin they have the best coaching group. ❤️🙏🏻

Girls we are so proud of you and all the hard work you have put in to achieve this. You represent our club so well but also your country as well. We will be there screaming today. Apologies in advance. 😬🫣
