Jatinderyoga Jatinder Wilson Yoga Teacher | Vedic Chant Teacher

Yoga classes in Epsom, Surrey and online. Yoga adapted to the individual, with the breath at the centre of the practice.

First yoga class free for new students. Private yoga and Vedic chant tuition available. My approach is to teach Yoga as a whole person practice for physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Classical yoga principles are used to ensure you are adequately prepared for all that is taught. Practice is encouraged with mindfulness of the body and the breath and acceptance, working at a comfortable pace

and level to suit each individual in a relaxed environment. Classes include yoga mindfulness, philosophy and practices that combine yoga postures (āsana), yoga breathing exercises (prāṇāyāma), meditative techniques (bhāvanā) and chanting (mantra). Yoga is so much more than the physical aspect, and when combined with other tools of yoga, the experience of healing is deeper and more meaningful to the person. Yoga is much more than the physical practice - it is about stability and peace in our relationship with ourselves and with those around us. It has been a lovely end to the summer term. The last class had a slightly different flavour to the movements we had been exploring. Pleased to see that students apply what they have learned about support & awareness, choosing what would best serve them.
We finished the Wednesday class with homemade brownies, and students brought homemade biscuits and healthy fruit to balance the treats! Here is a photo of us.
I’d also like to thank my Thursday online group for their support and commitment.
I am looking forward to a short break to rest, reflect and spend some time thinking about future classes.
I’d like to leave you with the meaning of a chant in praise of Yoga, which I shared at the end of term.

“Only through Yoga, Yoga is known
Only through Yoga, does Yoga progress.

The one who practises with dedication, enjoys its fruits for a long time”.

So, to all my lovely students, thank you for your support and commitment. Keep practising, and I look forward to seeing everyone in the Autumn.

A reflection from class this week🌿

Over the past 11 weeks, we have been exploring support, awareness, understanding and making the appropriate choices in practice.
Before and after class I asked my students what they had learned about themselves during this time. It was lovely to hear their reflections and how some of those insights are finding their way into their lives, not just on the yoga mat.
I just had a big smile on my face as this is what yoga is all about! Yoga is the relationship with ourselves and with others.

I too shared my reflection with them. This is the longest time I've stayed with a single theme, and I feel I've shifted in the way I teach. The learning and teaching feels deeper than the pose.

Namaste,

Jatinder

A good morning full of all things yoga...

My personal yoga practice, reviewing this evening's online class, meeting a lovely yoga teacher whose classes I will be covering for in the first two weeks of August, and chanting with my teacher online.
It was also lovely to see a former student. It always brings a smile when paths cross again, and new connections are made.

Looking forward to what the rest of the day brings and to teaching tonight.

Reflections from practice this week

Over the past few weeks we've been exploring support, awareness and understanding.

Using support isn't about making a posture easier or about moving away from support. It is about discovering which variation of a posture allows us to practise with steadiness, ease and a smooth, steady breath.

Through awareness, we begin to understand what is appropriate for our body and breath today. We can notice: What is my body telling me? Which variation allows my breath to remain smooth and steady? Where do I feel most stable?

One of the joys of teaching this week was watching students begin to make these choices for themselves. With less guidance from me, they were listening more deeply, adapting their practice where needed, and experiencing the principle of function over form.

When we practise āsana in this way—bringing together movement, breath and awareness—the practice becomes a moving meditation. Rather than trying to achieve a particular shape, we become fully present with our experience, moment by moment.

By the end of class there were smiles, renewed energy and even less pain. One student arrived with back pain after gardening, and we adapted the practice to suit her that day. Afterwards, she shared that she was so glad she had come.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply begin, and let the practice meet us where we are.

COOLING BREATH – A REMINDER FOR MY STUDENTS

With temperatures rising this week, here's a reminder of Śītalī and Sītkārī, the cooling breathing exercises many of my students will already know.

These traditional yogic breathing practices can help create a sense of coolness and relaxation during warm weather.

1. Sit up tall and comfortably. When you are still, bring awareness to your natural breath. Allow it to fall into a steady rhythm. When you are ready...

2. Curl up both edges of the tongue to form a tube, and then breathe in through this tube. Feel the cool air coming in throughout the length of your inhale.

3. Take the tongue back to the palate during the length of your exhale with the mouth closed.

4. Breathe out slowly. Repeat for 6–12 breaths.

5. Let go of the practice and notice the effect.

If you cannot roll the tongue in this way, you can achieve a similar cooling effect by opening your lips and teeth slightly as you breathe in and placing the tongue carefully between the upper and lower teeth so that the cool air can flow over the tongue. Breathe out slowly through the nose.

Śītalī and Sītkārī can help create a sense of coolness and relaxation, especially when practised with a longer exhalation. Try the exercises lying down for extra relaxation (I often do this!).

Stay cool and take care in the heat 🙏

Vedic chanting is a powerful tool in yoga to steady the mind and lift the mood.

As T.K.V. Desikachar reminds us, “The quality of our breath expresses our inner feelings.”

When the breath is calm, our inner state naturally begins to settle.

Through Vedic chanting, we work directly with the breath. Using sound, rhythm, and vibration, the practice helps regulate and deepen the breath, and in doing so can have a positive influence on how we feel.

It can help us feel more grounded, more at ease, and bring greater clarity to the mind. With regular practice, it becomes a deeply supportive and nourishing practice, which is why I love it.

Join us on Saturday 28th June, 10.00am–12.00pm, at St Michael’s Church, Ewell Village, Surrey.

Regular and new students are welcome — no previous experience needed.

Yoga that meets you where you are 🌿

My Wednesday morning class offers a thoughtful and adaptable approach to yoga, exploring movement with steadness, ease and awareness.
Using the mat, and simple supports such as a chair when helpful, we explore the function of familiar postures rather than focusing on how they look. Often, it's a small refinement that creates a very different experience, helping us move with greater confidence, stability and ease.
The emphasis is on understanding how a posture works for your body, allowing you to find the appropriate effort that naturally supports a smooth, steady breath.

Whether you're completely new to yoga, returning after a break, or have been practising for many years, you'll be warmly welcomed. The intention is always the same: making the practice work for your body, without striving for an "ideal" shape.

What you can expect:
✨ Individual guidance
✨ Options to suit different bodies and abilities
✨ A calm, friendly space where every body is respected

Join us:
🌿 Wednesday mornings | 9.30–10.45am
The Sanctuary, St. Michael's Church, Ewell Village

💻 Thursday evenings | Online

If you'd like to join either class or simply have a chat before booking, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Appropriate effort. Smooth, steady breath.

Namaste,
Jatinder
