With Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) coming in from October 2026, I’ve had a lot of questions about what it means in practice — especially for those already learning to drive 🚗

🔄 Transition period
There will be a 6-month transition.
If you got your provisional before 1 October 2026 and pass before 1 April 2027, you stay on the current system (45mph limit + 12-month R plates).
If you don’t pass by then, you move onto GDL.

📘 Learning to drive
• Minimum 6 months learning
• Training programme + logbook must be completed and signed off before booking your test

🪪 After you pass
• R plates extend to 24 months
• 45mph limit removed

🚫 Passenger rules
Apply during the R period (GDL only):
• Limits on passengers aged 14–20 at night
• Not for immediate family
• Not if an experienced driver (21+, 3+ years) is in the front seat

ℹ️ Other points
• Some limited exemptions (e.g. carers)
• Rules do not apply to all drivers — only those who pass under GDL

The aim is to help new drivers build experience more safely — but it’s important this works in real life too, especially for those who rely on driving day to day.
