The St. Michael’s College community celebrated the opening of the school year Mass on Monday.
Speaking at the beginning of Mass, Mr. O’Connor, St Michael‘s College Principal, welcomed pupils, staff, parents, guardians, and members of the Board of Governors. Reflecting on and celebrating all that is good in the St. Michael’s College community, he invited the pupils to take the opportunity to give thanks for all that they have and to pray for what they need and for the needs of others in their local community and throughout the world.
Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Peter O’Reilly, of the Parish of Enniskillen. In his homily Monsignor Peter encouraged the boys of the College to see success in terms of much more than exam grades.
"Exams and results matter but underneath them something deeper is happening, you are being formed. Think of the people you have yet to meet - people who one day will work beside you and will need to rely on you. Someone perhaps to whom you will promise your life. Perhaps children of your own who will look to you for strength and steadiness. They will need more from you than qualifications. They will need character, backbone, the ability to keep going, to keep contending, to ask for help and to begin again after disappointment. And some of that is being formed right now in you.” Monsignor Peter pointed to the example of Peter the Apostle in the Gospel who had faith in Jesus and achieved so much in his life.
Our wonderful choir led by Miss Moya Sweeney saw pupils from across different year groups come together through music and song. The hymns added to the sense of occasion. With the brass band and traditional musicians accompanying choir members throughout the celebration of the Mass. Special recognition to our vocalists for their courage in sharing their talent for the benefit of all. ‘Shepherd me O God’, the words of the psalm, were sung as a prayer of intercession for God’s help for the year ahead for all in the St Michael’s College community.
Many thanks to all who made the celebration of the Mass possible- to the Clergy and Staff of St Michael’s Parish, to the pupils who read at Mass and James McLoughlin, College Chaplain for his reflection.
