Eric Arthur Blair(25 June 1903 โ€“ 21 January 1950) was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic who wrote under the pseudonym, George Orwell.

Orwell is best known for his enormously successful titles, 'Animal Farm' and '1984'.

Both are powerful dystopianย novels, warning of a future world where the state exerts complete control over its citizens' social lives.

'Animal Farm' is also one of the novels studied on the GCSE Literature Paper 2 exam.

How significant do you think that Orwell's ideas were to the world that we live in today? ๐Ÿค”

Charles John Huffam Dickensย (7 February 1812 โ€“ 9 June 1870) was an English novelist and social critic.

Dickens left school at age 12 to work in a boot-blacking factory when his father, Johnย was incarcerated in a debtors' prison.ย

This experience inspired one of his many later writings - the novella, 'A Christmas Carol' (1843) - an allegorical text about greed and redemption, found on GCSE Literature Paper 1.

How do you think that Charles Dickens may have contributed to the socialist movement through his works? ๐Ÿค”

John Boynton Priestley (13 September 1894 โ€“ 14 August 1984) was an English novelist and playwright, who brought us the allegorical stage play, An Inspector Calls.

During the 1930s, Priestley became concerned about social inequality after the war, and was influential in developing the idea of a Welfare State.

The Welfare State was designed as a system to protect the health and well-being of the country's citizens, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits.

The system has evolved a lot over the years, and today, we know one of the benefits as Universal Credit.

Do you think the country is better off because of JB Priestley's contribution?

Emilia Lanier (1569โ€“1645),ย nรฉe Emilia Bassano, became the first woman to publish a book of original poetry at the age of 42, employing linguistic features resembling the later Shakespearean plays.

There has been much speculation about whether Shakespeare was, in fact, illiterate and had passed Lanier's work off as his own.

This theory now remains one of literature's biggest mysteries.

Do you think Shakespeare wrote his own material?

Every journey of a thousand miles starts with that first step.

John Agard (born 24 June 1949) is a Guyanese poet, playwright, and children's author with a huge catalogue of material.

His poem, 'Half-Caste,' depicts his anger at being labelled as such, while 'Checking Out Me History' speaks about identity.

Both poems are incorporated into EdExcel and AQA's English literature conflict poetry exam.

As a child, my favourite book to read was 'Say It Again, Granny!' A beautiful book celebrating old Caribbean sayings.

Do you have a favourite book or poem by John Agard?

I really don't enjoy the struggle. It always makes me feel as though there is no end!

What gets me over the 'hump' is when I think of the triumph I'll have at the end!

How will you focus on the triumph instead of the struggle this week?

It's been a trying couple of months, teaching online; not to mention the last year of uncertainty, pressure, and worry, under the rule of back and forth decisions that have left us all a lot more than mentally drained.

My hope for today's return to physical teaching, is that we are given the right support to nurture our childrens' young minds safely, without judgement, more pressure, or expectations of miracle working.

Let's stay SAFE, and stay SANE!

It may be hard, but it's not impossible!

It's the last day of half term! Why must people insist on having meetings on this day?!
