Welcome to An Idiom A Day, where we explore the quirks of languages! Today’s feature: Italian. In Italy, a truly wonderful person is affectionately called “a piece of bread.” Yes — bread. The thing you eat before the meal, during the meal, after the meal and sometimes instead of the meal.

So tell me: in your language, what do you call someone who’s genuinely great? And why do you think Italians went with bread — not cake, not tiramisu, not even a respectable lasagna — but bread? My theory: it’s simple, warm, universally loved, and always there when you need it… kind of like the friend who helps you move.

Cari amici italiani, in inglese esiste un modo di dire che, tradotto alla lettera, suona come “versare i fagioli” — e no, non è una ricetta per la nonna.
In realtà significa rivelare un segreto: quella persona che, davanti a un caffè, svuota il barattolo dei pettegolezzi e ti racconta anche la trama della tua vita.
Lo conosciamo tutti: “Don’t tell Luca — he’ll spill the beans.” Traduzione: Non dirlo a Luca, o lo sapranno tutti!
