We welcomed our new Post 16 students Alex and Jake who came along to Burghley Park on an ASDAN assignment to identify features during a countryside walk. Students were required to write a report on what they saw, including seeing numerous deer, understanding some of the history of the house, the park grounds, which hosted the Burghley horse trials, and the evergreen trees ,some of which date back over 300-years- Next week we have a trip to a local supermarket to identify recyclable products. A good start !

Jack has just successfully completed his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award. Jack completed 3-months volunteering at Barnardos, along with a physical and skills discipline finishing off with a gruelling 2-day expedition, where he and the team had to map read and walk over 13-miles in 2-days staying in a tent and cooking his own food. Jack has achieved something very special and we in Post 16 are all proud of him for completing the award.

Jack, Andrew and Tyler went on an educational walk to Burghley Park. The students walked around the house to take in the magnificent sights. The students and staff learnt about some of the history of the house and also saw some of the fences being constructed for the Burghley horse trial event in September. Taking part in local walks and seeing the environment is something the students enjoy, as it is part of the schools health and well being policy. We have also enjoyed walks in Barnack and Stamford Meadow.

On Friday the Photography and Statistics boys visited Silverstone for the Formula One Practice sessions. Whilst at Silverstone we met Red Bull Racing and Getty Images Photographer, Mark Thompson. He gave the boys tips of how to take good Formula One pictures and explained what he does over a weekend. It was a fantastic day and the boys were faultless. They asked lots of questions and were very polite. The boys should be so proud of themselves. They have some great photos which will be on display on Sports Day.

5 Peaks Challenge - Day 4
Today the team climbed the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon (1085m). We took the scenic, but challenging Pyg track up, & the Miner's track down. We have now completed our challenge & we have actually completed 6 Peaks! A sterling performance by each team member, & we are now about to go out for a celebratory meal in Llanberis.
Please support this excellent cause.

5 Peaks Challenge - Day 3
Today the team climbed the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike (978m). We had glorious sunshine until around 2400ft, when the mist descended, but this cleared again on our descent. We are now in Wales preparing for our final ascent of Snowdon. The team are an absolute credit to the school, & the staff team are immensely proud of their resilience & strength of character.

On Tuesday we were supposed to visit Newmarket Gallops as part of the theme of the term - sports photography. Sadly due to traffic and road closures we had to change plans extremely last minute. Instead we visited Fotheringhay Castle, where Richard III was born and where Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded. We then visited The Talbot Hotel in Oundle which was built out of the ruins of Fotheringhay Castle. Finally we ended our trip at Barnwell Park where we looked at different animals in their natural surroundings. We walked a mile around the lakes and sat in a hide watching little birds, squirrels and voles undisrupted by humans in their habitat. We had a really good day out!!

Post 16 students went along to Oakham church today to complete the Beliefs and Values Module of the ASDAN curriculum. The trip followed on from our visit to Oakham castle which was historically linked to the castle in regards to proximity of location and building alignment. The students went into the church and identified certain Christian symbols, including writings and ornaments related to worship. The students have now completed the ASDAN bronze curriculum this year and we look forward to them receiving their award once individually completed.
