Yesterday, a group of staff from across all three sites took part in Recovery Through Relationships, Cambridgeshireโs trauma-informed training supporting professionals to better understand children and young people who have experienced significant adversity and complex relational trauma.
It was an intense, powerful and at times emotional experience. Through immersive Virtual Reality, we were placed in the position of a child - experiencing their journey from life in utero, through infancy and as they grew, seeing how early experiences can shape development and have a lasting impact on their lives.
We learnt about the impact of trauma on the developing brain and neurological pathways, and how adversity can affect emotional regulation, attachment, behaviour, learning and relationships.
The training encouraged us to develop a โtrauma lensโ and to look beyond behaviour - asking โWhat has happened to this child?โ rather than โWhat is wrong with this child?โ
It was a powerful reminder of the importance of safe, consistent and compassionate relationships, and the difference that understanding and connection can make to a childโs ability to recover and thrive.
A huge thank you to Fiona and Emily from Cambridgeshire County Council for delivering such an impactful and thought-provoking training session. It has given our team lots to reflect on and take forward into our practice.
