The St.Mary Tyne Dock Schulze Organ Trust (C/o Ellesmere College)

The St.Mary Tyne Dock Schulze Organ Trust (C/o Ellesmere College) The magnificent Schulze Organ in 'Big School' at Ellesmere College started life in St Mary’s Church,Tyne Dock, South Shields in 1864.

It was rebuilt in 1906 and came to Ellesmere in 1981 when that church was closed down. During the 1981 move the organ was cleaned and some repairs completed, but essentially the organ remains little changed since its original construction and its maker intended. Whilst Ellesmere College houses the instrument, the custodians are the St. Marys Tyne Dock Schulze Organ Trust, a registered charity set up in 1981. What is the historical importance of this organ? Prior to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Crystal Palace, the English organ builders offered the church and cathedral establishments an instrument that was relatively unimaginative with a narrow tonal perspective. Prince Albert invited the great German organ builder Schulze to exhibit. They brought to England a sound and scale that had not been heard before. The effect of this instrument was quite simply astounding. Established English firms such as Willis, and Hill & Sons recognised the contribution in terms of sound-scape that Schulze had created and they quickly endeavoured to copy it. As a result of the Exhibition, Schulze received several commissions for instruments. The organs at Armley, Doncaster and Hindley being notable examples. Today those organs and the fine instrument at Ellesmere College are the only complete examples of the Schulze dynasty in this country.

Remembering Catherine Ennis...
The 'Finale' of our joint Schulze/HN&B concerts is the traditional singing of Jerusalem.
Catherine enthusiastically coined the recitals "Organ Tea's" because of the lovely Tea and Cakes on offer.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the loss of Catherine Ennis MA, former President RCO and organist and director of music at the church of St Lawrence Jewry in the City of London.
Catherine was a true friend of the Ellesmere Schulze.
