I had a lovely afternoon with my early years PGCE group at University of Chester yesterday 😊 It was our last teaching session together before their final placement and achievement of Qualified Teacher Status! The PGCE year can be very challenging but this group have shown amazing resilience and dedication and i feel privileged to be part of their professional journey 🄰

Unfortunately my youngest is having to do his SATs this year ā˜¹ļø SATs homework books were given out in January and now there is a SATS revision club being held after school. Why do we put this pressure on our children, parents and teachers? My eldest did not have to do his SATS because of COVID, so his teacher just shared teacher assessments- why did we not learn from this that SATs are pointless!

SATs don’t help, children, teachers or parents. Do you agree?

I’ve just received my certificate for my pgcert for teaching and learning in Higher Education. I’m really proud of this as it celebrates the work i have been doing for the last three years at Chester and LJMU universities 😊I absolutely love my job and feel very grateful that i get to talk about things i am passionate about everyday and share my learning with others. Sending lots of love to all the students i have had the pleasure of teaching over the last 3 years 🄰.

Do you have the courage to ā€˜Dare Greatly’ in 2023?

In the run up to Christmas, I have been reading Brene Brown’s book ā€˜Daring Greatly’ and thinking about how I want to show up in 2023. She talks about how we need to have the courage to be vulnerable and not let fear and shame prevent us from being seen and heard. Brown talks about how as parents and educators, we need to model this to our children through encouraging them to share their thoughts, feelings and ideas. For our youngest children, we need to be their voice and have the confidence to speak for them when needed. So this year, with my students, i hope to encourage them to find their voice and become teachers who have the courage to ā€˜dare greatly’ and for myself, i hope to learn how to become a bit more comfortable with being vulnerable too through my words and actions. I hope you do too ā¤ļø

I have been thinking a lot about energy lately. Do you ever walk into a room and feel someone’s energy? A person’s energy is known as a ā€˜biofield’ and has been studied by scientists. As a teacher, we often take on the energy of both the children and adults we work with- it’s not surprising therefore, that we are often exhausted at the end of each day! Whilst we can’t influence the energy that others bring into the workplace, we can protect our own and it is something I have had to learn to do over the years, to avoid burnout. Some of the ways I do this include, taking a break from social media, going for walks in nature or choosing who I do and don’t want to spend time with. As the quote says, I try to invest my energy wisely, so that I can always be at my best for my family and my students. So take some time to check in with your energy today- it’s a worthwhile investment!

Today I attended my Masters graduation at Chester cathedral 😊 I felt quite emotional, as completing this felt like a celebration of my 22 years working in early years. My work will never be rewarded financially but instead has been rewarded with kind words from parents of children I have taught, seeing early years practitioners I have supported grow in confidence and attending the graduation ceremonies of the next generation of early years teachers I have helped train. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey so far- it has been a privilege to work with so many amazing people šŸ’•

ā€˜FREE BOOKS GIVEAWAY!’ How are we feeling about Autumn? Love it or loathe it, change is inevitable and we have to learn to embrace it and appreciate it for what it offers us… a chance to learn. This week I have had a massive clear out! Going through all my old work materials has been like a trip down memory lane but having the courage to let them go has been very therapeutic 😊 It’s also made me appreciate all the amazing experiences and fantastic early years people I have met along the way 🄰 As part of my clear out, I found these beautiful Autumn story books which are brand new and were bought due to my obsession with books šŸ˜† So if you are one of the amazing early years people I have had the pleasure to meet over the years, then please say hello in the comments below and I will select a person at random to pop them in the post to next weekend. Lots of love to you allšŸ’• xx

What would be on your North Star Vision Board?

Before the craziness of the new school year begins, I am taking some time to reflect on the things I need to maintain in my life to keep me heading in the right direction; my north star 🌟 Each of these photos represent these things e.g spending time each day in nature, staying connected to my friends, prioritising time with my family and having some ā€˜me time’ every day. I have this vision board printed out and stuck in the front of my diary to use as a daily reminder and guide me back to the things that are important when i start to go off track.
