11+ Exam Technique: The Power of Process of Elimination 🧠✏️

One of the most useful techniques children can learn for the 11+ is process of elimination.

When a multiple-choice question looks difficult, the aim isn’t always to spot the correct answer immediately. Sometimes it’s much easier to identify the answers that cannot be correct.

A simple approach is:

1. Read the question carefully and work out exactly what it is asking.
2. Cross out any answers that are clearly wrong.
3. Look closely at the remaining options and test each one.
4. If you’re still unsure, make your best choice from the answers left rather than guessing from the whole list.

For example, if there are five possible answers and your child can confidently eliminate three, they’ve turned a difficult five-way choice into a much more manageable decision between two.

This technique is particularly helpful in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and multiple-choice Maths, where distractor answers are often designed around common mistakes.

The key is to practise elimination before exam day. Encourage your child to physically cross out incorrect options on practice papers (where permitted) and ask themselves:

“What can I rule out, and why?”

Over time, this builds logical thinking, accuracy and confidence — and helps children keep moving when they meet a question they can’t solve straight away.

11+ tip: You don’t always need to know the answer immediately. Sometimes knowing what the answer isn’t is the quickest route to finding what it is. 🎯

Considering a grammar school education for your child?

I’m now enrolling for my 11+ preparation groups for the next academic year and have just a few spaces remaining.

These sessions are for children starting Year 5 in September, who will be sitting the Wirral grammar school entrance exams in September 2027.

Today I had a visit from a new starter and his Snowman. He came along for moral support. I explained the class rules which he understood (see picture) and together we got past our first day nerves. In my classroom, anyone and any feeling is welcome, even if you’re a snowman ⛄️
