A really good question I was recently asked by an enquiring parent was:
“What is different about the way you teach SEND students?”
I thought my response might be useful to share with others too 💚
I think the biggest difference with SEND students is that I slow down and really get to know the child first. I’ve found that once a student feels safe, understood and not judged, that’s when the learning can really begin.
I try to remove as many barriers as possible. That might mean breaking work into smaller chunks, using visuals or practical resources, giving extra processing time, or adapting how a student can show their understanding.
I also recognise that progress can look different for every child. For one learner, success might be completing a full task independently, while for another it could simply be attending, engaging in conversation, or building enough confidence to give something a try.
I work closely with parents too, because they know their child best. I believe consistency between home and tutoring/school makes a huge difference, particularly for students with additional needs or anxiety around education.
Ultimately, I still have high expectations, but I believe it’s my role to find the approach that helps each individual child access learning successfully.
