The Department of Drama and Theatre is one of the leading theatre departments in the country.

Our academic members of staff offer an unrivalled breadth of historical, global, and practice-based approaches to the field. In the top ten in the UK for research, the department has a vibrant undergraduate body and hosts the largest postgraduate community in the country. We recently opened the Caryl Churchill Theatre, replacing the old 'black box' Studio. Designed by architects Foster Wilson, the new three-level theatre seats more than 175 people and is located adjacent to the Georgian house that hosts the majority of the department, the Katharine Worth Building.

Today our first year students did a Play In A Day - a stunning production of Caryl Churchill’s ‘Love and Information’ (in our very own Caryl Churchill Theatre!) followed by feedback and a Q&A with the amazing playwright April De Angelis who provided some incredibly insightful, exciting advice to our students. Well done to all who participated, we were blown away by the quality of work!

How wonderful to see a beautiful celebration of our beloved faculty member Liz Schafer, who is retired as of today! Featuring excellent speeches, a performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor by students past and present (including alum Tanya Reynolds!), and the tree in our arboretum where many a student has been taught by Liz! Thank you to everyone who attended, and a HUGE thank you to Liz for inspiring our students and colleagues for so many years 🌳

On Tuesday, RHUL MA Directing graduate Thomas Vallely directed RHUL Drama students in a production of Rory Mullarkey’s “The Grandfathers” at the Thessaly Theatre Under 30 Festival. The production took place in an Ancient Greek theatre in Larissa, with support funding RHUL obtained from Thessaly Theatre. Big congratulations to the team on their participation in the festival!

What a fantastic TaPRA 2026 conference, congratulations to co-chairs Dr Georgina Guy, Dr Emma Cox, and Dr Lennoxx Goddard and to Dr Prarthana Purkayastha for winning the David Bradby Monograph Prize (jointly with Shane Boyle from QMUL) for ‘The Archives and Afterlives of Nautch Dancers in India’! The conference included papers from some of our RH Drama teaching team and PGRs and was attended by even more (including Dan Rebellato, Rebecca McCutcheon, David Bullen, Jen Parker-Starbuck, Helen Nicholson, Roberta Mock, and Natcha Chirapiwat).

Two exciting upcoming events! First, Dr Will Shuler is one of the keynote speakers at the Thessaly Theatre Under 30’s Festival in Larissa, Greece (23 Aug to 13 Sept). His talk, “The Actor Facing New Technology,” discusses when and how to engage with VR and MR in performance. https://thessalytheatreunder30.com/

Second, Directed by MA Directing graduate Thomas Vallely and performed by current RHUL Drama students and recent graduates, Rory Mullarky’s “The Grandfathers” comes to Thessaly Theatre’s Under 30’s Festival in Larissa Greece on 8 September. Our colleague Dr Emma Cox will be delivering a keynote in Istanbul this September at the Turkish Society for Theatre Research Annual Conference, Marmara University (10-12 Septemebr) with a talk titled ‘Humanitarian Reason, Theatrical Collaboration, and the Public Cultures of Migration Disaster Forensics’.
