✨ Meet Yoon, a Royal Holloway ISC alumna & RHISC Excellence Scholarship recipient, who turned her fascination with electronics into a future in electronic engineering 🤖💙
Growing up watching her electronic engineer father taking broken things apart and fixing them, Yoon felt her heart lay in the field of STEM even after gaining a degree and experience in HR. Hence, she decided to follow her passion and pursue her dream of studying in the UK. The International Foundation Year at Royal Holloway gave her the confidence, STEM academic foundation, and support she needed to thrive at the university.
Her academic excellence, attendance and extracurricular activities during the foundation course led to her being awarded the Royal Holloway International Study Centre (RHISC) Excellence Scholarship, a £3,000 award towards her first-year tuition fees.
Today, Yoon is studying MEng Electronic Engineering and hopes to one day develop machines and robots that can help people and animals during environmental crises.
Beyond academics, the Foundation Year helped her settle into life in the UK, build lasting friendships with fellow international students, and find a community that made her feel at home.
💬 “All the students on the IFY are international, so we all understood what it was like - moving countries, feeling alone and not speaking your first language. We spent a lot of time together and the teachers, staff and counsellors were all really supportive. I had so much fun living in Founders Building student accommodation for my foundation year.”
🌍 For Yoon, the International Foundation Year was more than a pathway to university, it was the beginning of a journey towards the future she had always dreamed of.
