Royal Holloway Earth Sciences Community: Jonathan Paul, Associate Professor and Admissions Tutor. Jonny teaches courses in hydrogeology and geophysics, and leads the first field course (straight after Welcome Week in September), to Devon. “I have worked in four different Earth Science departments across the UK – Royal Holloway is easily the best in terms of student experience. The main problem we have is that our students don’t want to leave us at the end of their degree.”

Royal Holloway Earth Sciences Community: James Brakeley, Geochemistry technician. James keeps our various lab spaces running smoothly, helps out with student projects, and sometimes comes on our field courses. “There are so many different things going on in the Department and I really like being involved in as many different projects as possible. I spent this morning analysing river water samples for heavy metals, and am now measuring uranium isotopes in a core of chalk, in order to predict past climate changes.”

Royal Holloway Earth Sciences Community: Olivia Bennett, Masters by Research student. Olivia’s project investigates ground engineering risk associated with rocks belonging to the Mercia Mudstone Group. She is just about to embark on a career in the Engineering Geology sector but will miss our department terribly – well done Olivia! “My project supervisors introduced me to so many of their industry contacts. Knowing who to talk to was really important in helping me to get my job."
