Today was our first Rep Fair of the 25/26 academic year ๐Ÿ™Œ

We had so much fun chatting to you all about our work as representatives, from course to senior course to school level representation! Thank you to all the representatives who helped out today, the academics who managed to donate hundreds of fantastic books (which we and the students LOVED), and the amazing SU voice team for setting this up- this wouldnโ€™t be possible without you! ๐Ÿซ‚

Soโ€ฆ a little bit about me (your LSE School Representative) ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

Iโ€™m Dominika, going into my 3rd (and final ๐Ÿฅฒ) year as a Biochemistry student!

I started my journey at RH through a foundation year, which I thoroughly enjoyed. That additional year gave me the experiences, skills and stability I need to run, and be elected, for LSE School Representative in 24/25. Last year we had made such a positive impact on our departments, from pushing student feedback to monthly celebrations, which only fostered my desire to stay in the role just a little longerโ€ฆ. and so here I am! ๐Ÿ˜

Last year I supported professional and personal developmental opportunities, cultured effective communication methods between students, reps and staff, voiced and tackled student feedback and celebrated your achievements ๐Ÿ‘

This year, while I continue to work on the initiatives I already started, my main goal is fostering ways of student-centred learning to support your engagement in and beyond the lecture theatre. I will do this by gathering both student and staff feedback on effective engagement methods. I will coagulate the feedback in a report to share with both students and staff. I hope this will help students understand how to engage with their learning, whilst providing staff with a range of tools to use during their teaching ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿซ

I look forward to this busy and exciting academic year! If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, please donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to me via instagram or email ([email protected]) ๐Ÿ“จ

In light of Deaf Awareness Week, Iโ€™d like to highlight the fantastic work of our wonderful RHUL Academics in joining discussions for identifying where new signs for scientific terminology were needed ๐Ÿ‘‹๐ŸŒ

The following extracts are from a blog by science museum group:

- โ€˜The real problem is the lack of vocabulary for sciences,โ€™ said Dr Audrey Cameron OBE, University of Edinburgh. โ€˜[Historically] we had to rely on finger spelling, so we realised it was important to set up a glossary.โ€™

The Royal Holloway scientists described the origins and applications of several objects from the collection before being questioned by the sign language experts on the terminology they used. The sign language experts highlighting words that may need translating into BSL.

Together, the participants then developed potential signs, ensuring both clarity and specificity for the new signs, while remaining faithful to the science behind the terms. This collaboration is just one illustration of how museum collections can inspire unique research projects.

Ten signs discussed in the workshop have now been added to the glossary. These include signs for seismograph, seismometer, earthquake, focus (of an earthquake), seismic waves, polarisers and Dobsonโ€™s ozone spectrograph (one of the objects the team looked at). -

To read more about the process behind the creation of the signs, visit: blog.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/new-bsl-signs-inspired-by-the-science-museum-group-collection/

Fantastic involvement by our very own Earth Sciences Department! ๐Ÿ‘
