EXTORTION vs. BLACKMAIL — Are they actually the same?

I notice so many people use these words interchangeably, like they mean exactly the same thing — but they’re not! Let me break it down simply:

👉 Blackmail is when someone says: “Send me money, or I’ll share your private pictures / tell everyone your secret.”
It’s threatening to reveal something embarrassing or private to get what they want.

👉 Extortion is when someone says: “Send me money, or I’ll hurt you / destroy your things.”
It’s threatening harm or damage — not just exposure — to force you to pay up.

Same goal (getting something from you), different method.

For example:

In simple terms, extortion is using fear to get what you want from someone.
