Empowering Scout leaders to save hours on planning and deliver unforgettable meetings with confidence

31/08/2025

It’s Sunday evening. If the thought of planning your next meeting is starting to creep in, this is for you.

Try the "5-Minute Programme Plan."
Before you get lost in the details, just open a notebook and write down four things:
Opening: (e.g., Grand Howl, Inspection)
Game: (e.g., Human Knot)
Main Skill: (e.g., Practice the Bowline)
Closing: (e.g., Notices, Flags)

That's it. A simple structure is better than no structure. You can flesh it out later, but having this simple skeleton plan takes away 90% of the stress. Give it a try tonight!

It's Success Story Saturday.

Here’s a little moment that reminds us why we do this.

Picture a nervous Cub at their first-ever link-up camp with the Scout Troop. They're trying to tie a knot for a camp gadget and getting hopelessly frustrated.

Then, a Patrol Leader from the Troop comes over—not because a leader told them to, but just because they saw someone struggling. They don't tie the knot for the Cub; they patiently show them again, step-by-step, until the Cub gets it.

In that one moment, you see it all: leadership, kindness, and the incredible impact these young people have on each other.

Happy Resource Friday! Why reinvent the wheel when you don't have to?

For any new leaders (or experienced ones feeling a bit uninspired), one of the most useful places to get ideas is the official Scout Association's "Programme On A Plate" (POAP).
It's a huge library of themed activities, games, and plans that are already linked to badge requirements.

If you're ever staring at a blank planner, this is a fantastic place to start.

You can find it on the Scouts website. Don't be afraid to lean on the amazing resources that are out there!

It's Well-being Thursday, and I want to open up a conversation.

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. But it also comes with its own unique pressures that often go unspoken.

So, I want to create a safe space to ask a question, and I'd love your honest answers in the comments:

What is the most stressful part of being a volunteer that nobody ever talks about?

There are no right or wrong answers. Let's be open and support each other. You're not alone in this.

It's Scout Skill Wednesday, and let's talk about a big one: knife safety.

The goal isn't just to teach a list of rules; it's to empower Scouts with a deep respect for a useful tool.

A great way to start is by teaching the concept of the "blood circle." Before they can open their knife, a Scout must hold their arm out and turn in a full circle. If they can't touch anyone, they are safe to proceed. It’s a simple, physical rule that reinforces personal space and safety.
A perfect first practical task once they've established their safe space? Making a feather stick for fire lighting.

It's Two-Minute Tuesday! Here's a quick tip for managing a chaotic Cub Pack.

The Problem: You're trying to explain a game, but no one is listening over the noise.
The Solution: The "Listen Up" call-and-response.

Teach the Pack a simple chant. When you shout "Listen Up!", they must stop what they're doing and shout back "We're all ears!" (or any phrase you like).

Practice it once or twice when they're calm.
Use it when you need silence. It's a game in itself and far more effective than just trying to talk over them.

It's a simple trick that saves your voice and your sanity!

It's Mission Monday, leaders!

We often get caught up in the details of planning, but it's good to remember the promise we make: "to help other people."
Sometimes that means helping a Cub learn to tie their shoelaces. Sometimes it means helping a Scout navigate a real hill for the first time. And sometimes it just means providing a safe, fun place where a young person can laugh with their friends for 90 minutes.

Never underestimate the impact of your small, consistent acts of help. They are the foundation of everything we do.

What if Sunday evenings weren't for stressing about your programme?

What if you could head into the week feeling calm, prepared, and genuinely excited for your next meeting with your Cubs or Scouts?

That's the goal. That's the vision.

For everyone in the middle of their planning session right now – you're doing an amazing job. Remember your "why" and know that this page is here to make the "how" a whole lot easier.

Leaders, I need your help. I'm on a mission to make life easier for volunteers, and I have a quick question for you.

As you start to think about the Autumn term, what is the single biggest challenge you're facing with your programme planning?

Is it finding fresh ideas? Ticking off badge requirements? Managing your budget? Something else entirely?

Be as specific as you can in the comments below. The more I understand, the better I can help! 👇

Myth Buster Friday! 💥

The Myth: "You need a car full of expensive gear from Go Outdoors to give your section a real adventure."

The Fact: The best adventures are powered by imagination, not your bank balance.
Three amazing, low-cost adventures you can run this term:

The Local Landmark Hike: Ditch the epic mountain expedition. Plan a route to a local point of interest (a historic church, a unique tree, the highest point in your town). The adventure is in the planning, the navigation, and the journey itself.

Back-to-Basics Cooking: Forget fancy Trangia stoves for a night. Challenge your patrols to cook a simple meal (like damper bread or campfire doughnuts) on an open altar fire. It’s a far more memorable skill.

The Wide Game in the Woods: All you need is a local woodland area and some torches. A well-planned wide game at dusk is more exciting and adventurous for a Scout or Cub than any expensive activity centre.

Adventure is a mindset, not a shopping list!

Midweek check-in, leaders! On a scale of 1-10, how's your energy level today?

Whatever your number is, here's something to think about: a young person in your section has a skill, a memory, or a boost of confidence that exists purely because of you.

It's a powerful thought, isn't it?

Let's lift each other up. Share one small 'win' you've had at Cubs or Scouts recently in the comments below! 👇

Evening Leaders! Looking for a quick game to kick off your meeting that needs absolutely no equipment? The Human Knot is one of my all-time favourites.
It's perfect for both Cub Packs and Scout Troops, and it's a brilliant icebreaker for building teamwork and communication skills.
Here’s how you do it:
The Goal: Untangle a human knot into a single, unbroken circle.
The Setup:
Get your section to stand in a circle shoulder-to-shoulder.
Have everyone reach across the circle with their right hand and grab the hand of someone opposite them.
Next, they do the same with their left hand, but they MUST grab a different person's hand.
The Challenge:
Now, working together, they have to untangle themselves by stepping over, ducking under, and turning around... all without letting go of the hands they are holding!
It's a fantastic puzzle that gets everyone talking and laughing. Let me know if you try it!
