Hosting a wh**ky tasting? Avoid these three common mistakes. 👇

🥃 Don't tell people what they're supposed to taste.
🍽️ Don't forget the food.
💬 Don't do all the talking.

We asked some of our teachers and contributing experts what they'd warn first-time hosts about, and their advice had one thing in common: the best tastings are conversations, not lectures.

What's the best tip you've ever been given for hosting a wh**ky tasting?

What makes people remember a wh**ky tasting?

We asked some of our teachers and contributing experts, including Dave Broom, Joe Cabassa, Gordon Steele, Sandy MacIntyre and Vic Cameron, for their advice on creating a relaxed, pressure-free atmosphere.

Their message was consistent:
• Lead with warmth, not authority.
• Encourage discussion rather than "correct" answers.
• Tell stories that bring the wh**ky to life.
• Keep beginners at the centre of the experience.

Creating a welcoming environment doesn't just help newcomers, it leads to better conversations and more memorable wh**ky tastings for everyone.

Vic & Gordon rate the Aberfeldy 15 as a good example of a cask finish that’s worked well. They don’t appear to make it anymore, so our current batch of tasting packs offer a good chance to try it!

Every stage of wh**ky production leaves its fingerprint on the final spirit.

In the final article of our Why Does This Wh**ky Taste Like That? series, we bring together everything we've explored to show how each production decision contributes to a wh**ky's unique character.

If you've followed the series, we hope it changes the way you think about the next dram you enjoy.

A History of Scotland’s Independent Bottlers 🥃

Ever wondered why independent bottlers matter so much to Scotch wh**ky? Their story stretches back much further than you might think, from the merchants and grocers of the 19th century to the rise of Signatory Vintage and the huge choice of single-cask and small-batch releases available today.

Wh**ky author and educator David Stirk explores how independent bottlers helped satisfy a growing appetite for unusual whiskies, greater transparency and bottles from distilleries consumers might otherwise never have tasted.

What exactly is an independent bottler, and why do they matter? Wh**ky author and educator David Stirk explores the history, evolution and lasting influence of the companies that have expanded the world's appreciation of Scotch wh**ky. On 23 August, 1988, Andrew Symington registered the Signatory Vi...

How many whiskies should you serve at a tasting? 2? 4? 8?

We asked some of our teachers and contributing experts and, while their answers weren't identical, they all landed around the same number… even if Gordon went a bit rogue!

Watch to find out why four or five drams might be the perfect tasting line-up. How many whiskies would be in your ideal tasting?

“Sherry wood, whack!” Meanwhile, for Vic, Tamdhu 12 takes him back to being a schoolboy… and sniffing his pencil case 😂
