You Survived Your First Ballroom Class… Now What?

This post are for our class students

You made it through your first ballroom class! You learnt some steps, met some new people and probably made a few mistakes along the way.

Now it’s time for week two.

You might be thinking, “I can’t remember the steps!” Don’t worry—you’re not expected to. Learning to dance takes repetition. What felt completely confusing last week may already feel a little more familiar this week.

The biggest thing to remember is don’t try to be perfect.

Focus on enjoying the music, listening to your teacher and getting comfortable with the movement. Every mistake is simply part of learning.

You may even notice some small victories:

* You remember a sequence without help.
* You stay in time with the music.
* You stop looking at your feet.
* You feel more confident dancing with a partner.

These little improvements are what build great dancers.

So come back, have fun and keep dancing. Your second lesson is where the journey really starts to take shape!

I don’t think waltz is for me

We hear this all the time.

People think it’s old-fashioned…

Too slow…

Or too difficult.

The truth?

Waltz is one of the best dances for learning timing, connection, and confidence. Once you understand the rhythm, everything starts to click.

You don’t need previous experience, fancy shoes, or perfect coordination.

You just need to take that first step.

When you hear the word “waltz,” what’s the very first word or feeling that comes to mind?

✨ SO… WHY SHOULD YOU START BALLROOM DANCING?

Maybe you want to learn something completely new.

Maybe you want a fun way to exercise.

Maybe you want to feel more confident.

Maybe you’ve always dreamed of dancing but never thought you could.

Or maybe you simply fancy doing something that gets you away from the sofa! 😂

Ballroom dancing can give you:

💪 Movement & exercise
🧠 Mental stimulation
🎵 A connection with music
❤️ Social connection
🕺 Better coordination
✨ Confidence
😊 And a LOT of smiles

But perhaps the best thing?

You don’t have to wait until you’re “good enough” to enjoy it.

You can enjoy being a beginner.

You can laugh at the mistakes.

You can celebrate the little wins.

And you can discover that you’re capable of far more than you thought.

So if you’ve been thinking:

“I’d love to learn to dance, but I’m not sure I can…”

Come and give it a try.

Your first step doesn’t have to be perfect.

It just has to be a step. ❤️

🌟 Not long now 🌟

As you know our Principal, Jan Bosson, has been named a finalist in the Active Group category for the BBC Radio Cumbria Make a Difference Awards 2026! 🎉

The award ceremony is on Sunday and we would like to wish Jan and all the other people who have been nominated. 🍀 Good Luck 🍀

This recognition is a testament not only to Jan’s dedication and commitment to putting on events and creating opportunities for people to get active, but also to every single person who attends and supports her sessions.

Without the amazing people who show up, and get involved, have fun and keep coming back to our Ballroom classes, Show sessions and Walk group, none of this would be possible. ❤️

So, from Jan and the team, thank you for your continued support. This recognition belongs to you too!

I hope you enjoyed our Latin Technique Class today! 💃🕺

✨ Theme: Strong Core — Effortless-Looking Cha Cha Cha ✨

Today we focused on building a strong, stable core to help create greater control, balance and precision — while keeping the Cha Cha Cha looking light, natural and effortless.

It’s all about working smarter, not harder: strong through the centre, relaxed through the movement, and allowing the technique to create that effortless look. 🔥

Well done everyone! 👏

✨ Today’s Private Lessons ✨

Today’s focus was on three key areas:

🪩 Floor-craft — using the space effectively, navigating the floor with awareness, and making confident decisions.

🤝 Connection — developing clearer communication between partners through lead, follow, and body awareness.

🧍 Alignment — improving posture, balance, positioning, and efficiency of movement.

Small technical adjustments can make a huge difference to how comfortable, connected, and confident you feel on the dance floor. 💫

❤️ THE BIGGEST BEGINNER MISTAKE?

Trying to be perfect.

You watch experienced dancers and think:

“Why can’t I do that?”

Because they’ve probably spent hundreds of hours practising!

You’re seeing the finished product — not the awkward first steps, forgotten routines and wrong turns that came before it.

When you start ballroom dancing, focus on:

✅ Learning the basics
✅ Improving your timing
✅ Becoming more comfortable moving
✅ Building confidence
✅ Enjoying the music
✅ Celebrating small improvements

Maybe today you remember 3 steps.

Next week you remember 6.

A few weeks later, you suddenly realise:

“Hang on… I’m actually dancing!” 😍

That’s the moment we’re looking for.

Don’t compare your Day 1 with someone else’s Year 5.

Your only competition is yesterday’s version of you.

Tomorrow: What can ballroom dancing actually do for you?
