Don’t guess. Read what’s in front of you. 🧤

As a goalkeeper, you’ve got to take in the information you’re being given.

The coach has the ball in his hands — what’s the most likely thing coming next? A volley.

Watch what’s happening, read the situation and then react. Don’t make the decision before you need to.

See it. Read it. Then react.

Catch mentality 🧤

Option A should always be two hands and catch it if you can.

Go into every save with that mentality first — can I get two hands on this and hold it?

Sometimes the shot means you’ll need a different type of save, and that’s absolutely fine. But when the catch is there, that should always be your first thought.

Catch first. Deal with the rest when you have to.

Positioning is the most important thing 🧤

As a goalkeeper, we’d much rather you get beaten at your far post than your near post. If you’re getting beaten at the near post, more often than not, that’s down to your positioning.

And it’s always good to get the young keepers involved in the coaching too. Get them to explain what they’ve learned and show that they actually understand why we’re asking them to do it.

Learn it. Understand it. Then put it into practice.

Can’t beat a good high tempo set in training!

Always demand more of yourself and your coach in training and you will see huge improvements.

Nothing to lose, but everything to gain 🧤

A lot of it is simply mindset — have the thought that you’re going to catch the ball and commit to trying to hold it.

If you catch it, brilliant. If you don’t, make sure you’re still pushing it wide and away from the danger area.

Attack the ball, try to hold it, and if you don’t, push it to safety.

Don’t just dive forwards — dive diagonally forwards 🧤

That way, when you make the save, you’re pushing the ball wide and away from goal rather than straight back into the danger area.

It can be the difference between a save being made safe and the ball coming back off the post or straight to an attacker.

Small detail, big difference. 👏
