This is why the way we parent can change the world!
This is why is so important!

How many of you relate to this?
Give yourself credit. Being a mother is hard.

Love this! A major theme in our workshops is learning to take care of ourselves, so that we maintain our happiness and our physical and emotional health. If we do that, we will be much better able to care for our wee ones. Even if it's finding 10 minutes to sit quietly, it can make all the difference!

Did you know that certain foods before bedtime can help with sleep?
Giving certain food for dinner/a bedtime snack may aid sleep a little.
Here are some suggestions:

Interesting points and an alternative perspective to some of the ideas around baby sleep- what are your thoughts?
"You need to teach your child to sleep".
Let's myth bust this common comment today.
It is totally and utterly WRONG. You do NOT need to ever "teach your child to sleep", no matter what anybody tells you (and whoever they are)!
Your child already knows how to sleep, in fact they have known how to sleep since they were a tiny foetus in your uterus. Since they were the size of your palm they have been able to get themselves to sleep.By the time they were born they were pretty masterful at this skill. You could even say that a newborn is more skillful at sleeping than an adult. Adults ignore their own innate sleep cues everyday, they push themselves to stay awake when they are tired and they try to force themselves to sleep when they are not. They also introduce many things into their environment that inhibit their sleep. Newborns don't do this, they 'just' sleep following their body's cues.
The problem is twofold:
1. Adults today are largely ignorant of the needs of babies. We try to force them to sleep independently many months, even years, before they are ready to do so. Why do babies sleep so well in utero? Because they are in constant contact with the mother, they are well nourished (ie not hungry or thirsty), they are warm, they are surrounded by reassuring noises, they are in the dark, or any light they are exposed to is red-tinged and they are constantly 'rocked' by movement. It is completely unnatural to expect a baby to sleep without these things once they have been born. Expecting them to fall asleep alone in a cot/crib/basket/bassinet, expecting them to sleep to a parent enforced schedule (overriding their innate cues) and expecting them to sleep for the hours that adults deem 'appropriate' (most are anything but) is just plain wrong.
2. Adults today are largely ignorant of human sleep biology. We inhibit our babies' sleep in so many ways - from using nightlights and lightshows that are blue, green or white, to using blackout blinds and sleep shades for naps in the daytime, to not understanding that breastmilk made at night has numerous special sleep inducing properties that a 'top up' of formula doesn't have. It's actually a miracle that babies can sleep at all given how much we do 'wrong' to inhibit it!
Note - neither of these problems belongs to our babies. It isn't our babies that need 'teaching' - it is us, as adults!
I can guarantee you that no parent ever needs to teach their baby to sleep. Just as they don't need to teach them to eat, wee or burp . All you need to do is to understand normal baby sleep and how not to inhibit it and have patience for your baby's sleep to slowly and naturally mature.

"I did then what I knew how to do - now that I know better, I do better" Maya Angelou. This is one of my favourite quotes when it comes to parenting- what are yours?

"I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better" Maya Angelou. One of my favourite quotes ever... We often talk about this in our ToddlerCalm workshops.
