Tour de France Volunteers Wanted
Applications are now open for volunteers to support the Tour de France when it comes through Midlothian in July 2027—and three local young people are already leading the way in encouraging others to get involved.
Keen volunteer and sportsman Ben Matthews, competitive cyclist and Scotland learning disability sport medallist Kerri Mackenzie, and disability sports enthusiast Emily O’Malley, pictured with Lesley Kelly, the Chief Officer of Midlothian Community Action, and Depute Council Leader Colin Cassidy, are helping inspire people across Midlothian to sign up for what promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You may have heard about this development in England. Consultations are in progress in Scotland on mobile phone use in schools with some schools already having facilities in place for pupil mobile phone lock ups (eg Portobello High). You can let your school know your thoughts on this at any point before any formal consultation may take place but for any families concerned about additional support needs being recognised we are sharing this update from Diabetes UK to illustrate how in response to government policy in England, guidance for reasonable adjustments will still apply and that will hold true should any changes occur in Scotland too.

The government has updated its guidance on using mobile phones in schools in England and there’s an important reminder in there about pupils with medical conditions.

While the guidance supports limiting phone use during the school day, some pupils need access, as vital tech like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and hybrid closed loops (HCLs) are linked to phones.

The guidance also reinforces schools’ existing duties to:

• make reasonable adjustments for pupils to avoid discrimination
• put arrangements in place to support pupils with medical conditions

We’re also engaging with the government to make sure that the needs of pupils with diabetes aren’t overlooked. The bottom line is clear. Schools should continue supporting pupils with diabetes to use their phones for diabetes tech. Because ultimately, managing a medical condition safely should never be treated like breaking the rules.
