Edinburgh Young Musicians

Edinburgh Young Musicians Helping all children to enjoy music & realise their potential. Saturday music classes. Ages 3 -18. A large part of EYM’s work involves very young children.

Edinburgh Young Musicians is all about the joy of making music together. Since its inception in 1998, thousands of children have been inspired by EYM’s classes, which range from pre-school musical play via beginners' instrumental & musicianship classes to choirs, string orchestras & chamber music. A normal Saturday morning sees around 300 children attending various combinations of 44 different classes, all held at George Watson's College, EH10 5EG. Although all teaching is done in groups, children are encouraged to take individual instrumental lessons outwith EYM where appropriate. We believe in developing various aspects of children’s musicianship before exposing them to the discipline of learning an instrument or joining a choir, and to that end we offer musical play & musical workshop classes to children in their final pre-school year as well as P1, P2 & sometimes P3. The success of an organisation such as EYM relies totally on the quality of staff. We have a wonderfully accomplished, energetic and committed team of staff, who all share EYM’s vision of wanting to develop children’s musical potential in a positive and enjoyable way, with the understanding that the better you do something, the more satisfaction and pleasure you will gain from it. We also have a fantastic team of assistants. Most of these are senior school pupils or university students, and many are former or current EYM pupils. The contribution made by the assistants is immense, and for many it provides useful experience for future careers as well as the opportunity to help inspire young children in the way they were inspired when they were younger. Edinburgh Young Musicians is a Scottish Charity No. SC051034 regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator.

It's that time of year again when our S4, S5 & S6 pupils are (re)discovering the mental health and emotional benefits of taking a break from revision to focus on a session of music practice or to attend their EYM classes. When they return to their revision, their brains feel refreshed, their stress levels are reduced, their revision becomes much more productive and the exams don't seem like such an unwelcome prospect!

Members of one of our P2/3 Musical Workshop classes were thrilled that one of their dads visited their class last Saturday with his bassoon, giving them a chance to see & hear it played live. It seems that every question that could possibly be asked about a bassoon was asked!

Huge congratulations to our Junior & Senior String Orchestras who did us proud with their excellent and confident performances as part of the Janie Beeston Memorial Concert promoted by Edinburgh Competition Festival Association on Saturday afternoon. Anne Giles conducted a varied programme including music by Giovanni Gabrieli, Handel, Johann Strauss the Younger & Piazzola. All that careful rehearsal really paid off!

EYM teachers and assistants are wonderful! With a sudden flurry of unavoidable staff absence on the last 2 EYM Saturdays, including 2 teachers being taken ill during the last 2 Friday nights, other teachers and assistants have been totally supportive and willing to step up to take classes they don't normally take, with almost no warning. Thank you Laura, Katie R, Yasmin H, Max, Maria, Helen & Alex for being so wonderfully accommodating!

What an excellent, if slightly early, Christmas concert we had on Saturday! String orchestras, choir in all its various formations, chamber music, recorder consorts and recorder ensemble all performed with great skill and enthusiasm. And the audience obviously relished the chance to join in with some of the carols.

We are delighted that former EYM pupil Yasmin Mair has just joined our staff to teach some Musicianship classes. As well as playing the French horn, Yasmin is a music therapist and teacher of piano and singing, with several current & former EYM children amongst her private piano pupils. Welcome back Yasmin!

It's always lovely to hear news of former EYM pupils. Now that we've been running for 27 years, maybe we shouldn't be surprised to hear that one has just been made a professor. Congratulations to Prof. Susi Ebmeier!

EYM pupils have loved these days on many occasions in the past. New friends, new music and fresh inspiration!
